Basically here is my story: I did terribly in my UG, wasn't focused, motivated, etc, and at one point just stopped showing up and even stopped trying to withdraw from classes that I knew I couldn't pass. So basically my GPA is terrible. Since then I've worked at a few places (research, volunteer at PA practice, worked in IT, etc), then I went and finished a Post-bac finishing all my pre-med reqs and some other courses (24 in all) with a 3.7 GPA, which brought my cGPA up a bit. I took the MCATs just a little bit ago and am planning to apply broadly to US-MD, DO, and 5 Carib schools (SGU, Ross, AUC, Saba, & AUA). What do you think my chances are:

    cGPA: 2.54
    sGPA: 2.47
(this is after combining in my 2 yrs of Post-bac with a 3.7 cGPA and 3.75 sGPA)
    MCAT: 35Q

Chances? Is it even worth it for me to apply to US schools? Kind of feel like my 6 year old grades will always hold me back. They pulled me down so low, I don't know if I can ever really recover from it.
Def have a chance at all schools, that MCAT really will help and the upward trend in the sciences is great. You have a shot at all let us know how you do!

OK guys I've lurked here for a long time, but now that I finally have my application together I thought I'd see what you guys think. I know GPA SUCKS 2.55c 2.45s (granted from a top 25 uni), the damage was mostly done 6-8 years ago when I was an undergrad, and really it's unrepairable with the amount of units I have. There's no great excuse for it, I was simply immature and didn't take school seriously. After school I worked as a technical recruiter for 3 years before I decided that I really wanted to go to medical. I got my act together and retook all my sciences, but the terrible grades i got in bio 1/2 and chem 1/2 years ago is a lot to over come. Here are my post-bacc grades:

    chem 1/2: A-/B
    Bio 1/2: C+/B
    Ochem 1/2: B/A
Phys 1/2: B+/A- (1st sem was calc based)
    Calculus: B
    A&P: B
I did however, do poorly the first time I took O chem 1 and got a D, but I bounced back from it and turned it into my strongest subject and have a LOR from my professor and lab professor. This puts my post-bacc gpa right around a 3.0 with that factored in, which unfortunately, still isn't stellar.

    Other things:
    MCAT: 28N (10p, 10v, 8b)
    40+ hours hospital volunteering
500+ hours working in private ophthalmology practice
    4 LOR (3 phd profs)

Will I even get looked at with my GPA so poor? I feel like I've grown up a lot since my undergrad experience and have the maturity and motivation to succeed in medical school. Does admissions factor this sort of thing in? Thanks very much in advance!!

You have improvement that will get you looked at..Apply to both Ross and St. Georges, I think you stand a chance in either..Ross may MERP you or not since you already did a post bacc...I too had a not so great undergrad went to grad and improved and I am a 4th yr at Ross. So def with the other background you have i think the improvement in your gpa shows you can handle the work, and the other factors you have under your belt, volunteering and LORs, show that your serious about you desire. Send that app in! Best of Luck!

Anythoughts on DO or at the least SMP?

Have you filled out the DO app yet? Did you have many retakes in the sciences? keep in mind DO does grade replacement. Our GPAs and situations are almost identical, but my DO GPA came out to like a 2.8 or so and your post-bacc grades are much better than mine. Not to mention your MCAT blows away the DO average for most schools. I'm definitely no expert, but I say give it a shot. Get crackin on that app!..It's pretty time consuming..

I'd say MERP because of GPA. Straight admission could be possible for January semester, but you'd probably need some pretty good EC's and a good explanation for the GPA.
