hi

First Aid for the Match says to apply as early as possible to garner the most number of interviews. My question is "Why is that"? Those applicants that apply later (OCt, Nov) will have less chance of receiving an interview than those that apply early (Sept)? Kinda wondering how applying late may affect your chances in receiving interviews and matching when the deadline for most programs is late in the year?

Because most of the programs fill most of their interview spots on a rolling basis...you know...first come first serve....so if you apply too late then all the spots may be full...even if you are a great candidate...on avg anyway....there are always exceptions I'm sure...but that's why it's suggested to get the app in asap

I have also been told you have to see it like a balancing act. If you submit a very incomplete application you will be knocked off by the programs filters.....if you wait with a more complete application you will make it thru the filters.....for me personally im waiting until october but im also applying for peds which isnt really that competitive

What you say is true.....but I know some students (US and caribbean) who applied on the 1st....and they were applying to things like IM....and yes they all had competitive scores on both steps.

I think at least for the IMGs ..it helps to send in a complete app. early...

I agree.....as early as possible with the most competitive application at that point.....for me I dont have time to finish it up until after my step next week.....its a hard decision but i think its better.....i guess i'll let everyone know after the process

My app was certified and submitted on 9/1/06.

All of my supporting documents were uploaded to the ERAS Post Office by the morning of 9/3/06.

I'm officially a Pathology Residency Candidate at this time...woo hoo!

I decided to get my completed app in as early as possible to maximize interview offers as well as be able to plan my interview season in advance.

Good luck to you!

Good job! You are ahead of the game. Your USMLE transcript should be uploaded tomorrow to complete the "required documents" needed for interview.
