i'm applying to ross...

I originally applied for September '04, but when I realized I wanted to get med school started as soon as possible I requested to change my starting date to May '04. I don't have much else to say. If I choose Ross (over St. George's and St. Matthew's) I'll have to find a place kind of quickly. I was wondering what options there are (costs/proximity/luxury/etc). Also I was wondering what kind of things I'd need to bring with me (like I just learned that the campus internet access went wireless so I'll need to get my laptop set up with that). Thanks.

Housing

Don't worry about housing until you get to Dominica. You will be taken on a free housing tour and can select an apartment when everybody else does. Just get to the island about two weeks early. You won't find much LUXURY here, but you will find comfortable apartments with what you need.

wireless internet access

here's an email that the IT department sent out last semester about getting your computer set up for the school's wireless internet:

"General student wireless access will be open to all students at the beginning of next semester. Initially, this area will be in the study carrell area in the north end of the library. We will be expanding to other areas around campus quickly as the semester progresses. It is highly recommended that those who wish to use this new service, procure wireless devices for their notebook systems. We will be supporting 802.11b for general wireless access in the open wireless areas on campus, and 802.11a for classroom wireless access. IT is recommended that students procure wireless devices that will support BOTH the A and B 802.11 wireless standards. However, the classroom wireless access project will not begin until at least the second half of 2004 so, students wishing to just use the general wireless campus access could procure just an 802.11b wireless device. We recommend Cisco, TrendMicro, Netgear, or Linksys wireless cards as these have all been tested on our systems. Just ensure that they support the two above mentioned standards. We will be supported notebook PC's running Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional operating systems. Unfortunately, we are still working with tech services on Apple laptop wireless support. Additionally, there have been some general, widespread wireless issues with Centrino processors. We will accept Centrino PC's for configuration, but caution that any technical issues concerning wireless access for these systems will HAVE to be referred back to the Manufacturer or reseller. We will be accepting approximately 10 notebooks per day for wireless configuration after the first day of the Jan. 2004 semester. Thanks and have a great holiday everyone!!!!"

...hope this helps.

Hey Mitch, does this housing tour include Ross's approved houses, such as those in Glanvillia? Or it is only for the apartments right on campus?

Thanks!!

Housing

The housing tour will take you all around the local area, including Glanvillia. You can tell the housing staff exactly what you are looking for and they do their best to bring you to an apartment as close to that as possible. They have been in and out of most of these apartments for years and usually know the owners well. ALL of the options they will show you is ROSS APPROVED housing. They will not show you non-approved housing because they (and I) STRONGLY suggest you NOT choose non-approved housing.
