Ross Blvd. Housing
Safe Home
Safe Home is a green building set back about 1/4 block on Ross Blvd. right across from campus. It seems fairly well managed and maintained. Units are small, but it is one of the few places offering real box-springs with their matresses (ie-REAL twin-sized beds). It is an older building of cinder-block and stucco. It is expensive due to proximity to campus, and there is usually a waiting list to get in. A big draw-back is that they usually turn off their central air-conditioning during school breaks, so if you intend to not go home for breaks you will be toasty warm. There is a laundry room on the first floor across from the reception desk. I'm not sure if the desk is manned 24 hours a day, but I saw girls sitting there during the daytime and early pm hours. Bathrooms are fully tiled and small. PBH/RUH (formerly Portsmouth Beach Hotel) is located on Ross Blvd. directly to the south of the Ross campus. There is a back path from the Ross campus that leads directly to the RUH facility. I stayed at the PBH in May of 2003. Portsmouth Beach Hotel previously was on the list of Ross approved accomodations for students, but lost their approval the when they did not pay their large electric bill. The result was that students were stranded there with no electricity to study for finals until Ross bailed out the PBH by guaranteeing their huge electric bill. The PBH has only recently been added the the list of approved Ross housing, and this approval was on a probationary basis. Since that time, DeVry has purchased part of the premises, remodeled the units, and is now calling it Ross University Housing. If parents are going there for a visit: The rooms are very basic, and nothing is "superior" about the superior rooms. The windows on the rooms are wooden slats covered with screens, or as the Dominicans call them, "window nets". No matter how much you run the airconditioning, air will leak out the slats, since there was NO GLASS on the windows. (duh) Now that Ross has purchased and remodeled part of the facility, I'm happy to report that there is REAL glass on the windows. I am not sure if the area still owned by PBH is glass windows, or if it is just the part that Ross now owns. The hallways are open-air, so I was surprised to find a cow taking a walk down the hall in the middle of the night. It seemed to delight in mooing to me through the door, which kind of made me want to sing "Home on the Range" at night when I was laying there trying to sleep. PBH does offer the benefits of close to school, but the security is not that great. Dollar for dollar, I believe that a secure apartment close to campus, with window bars and window nets in good repair is a better buy. The units are more like rooms with a small cooking area and tiny bathroom. When my child lived there before the Ross purchase, it was a series of problems. The sink in the bathroom fell off the wall. It took the maintenance folks a week to "repair" after 3 notifications. After the repair, water poured out the bottom pipe, creating a simultaneous footwash with each handwash. The facility housekeeping staff powerwashed the outside of the facility, and the two inch gap under the door caused a flood. Any item on the floor was soaked, including computer speakers. Management's response: "oh, well". I'm not sure about the new units, but the wooden slats on the windows left a lot to be desired as far as privacy. I had to send sheets down to hang in the windows, otherwise anyone walking by the unit could gaze right in to take an inventory of any valuables. The facility did have an in-ground swimming pool, but when I was there I chose to swim in the ocean, feeling it was a lot cleaner. I'd be very interested in reading some new comments from the new students that are living there now that Ross owns part of the facility. Please feel free to post some info, because I don't want students basing their housing decisions on my "old" and possibly outdated data. Best wishes! Dru

emhgee,
I'm a VERY fast walker, and I think Kootney would take me 20 to 30 min. to get to the Ross Campus. Bottom line is, if you live at Kootney, you'll need a car. Silver Lining is large, clean, and if I recall, they have quads. The central living room area is huge and spacious. I saw few pieces of furniture. It seemed pricey, consindering the landlord is collecting that amt. from 4 renters.

Anyone staying at Kootney???
After everyone's input (thanks!), I still decided to reserve with Kootney. Just wondering if anyone else is staying there and if they'd like to be my walking/public transportation buddy to and from school.

Kootney
20 minutes to Kootney? I don't understand - according to the Ross site they have the apartments 7 minutes away walking. Does Ross actually verify any of the information that is put up on housing or are they just putting in what ever the landlords want on the list???

modes of transportation
Kootney is about 7 min. by car or 20 to 30 min. on foot. As for the reliability of info on the Ross housing site, you would have to ask Ross...we're just giving you the real deal here.
