Hi!
Just wondering if anyone knows some info on the Avie Ville Apts(3BD/3BA) located in Banana Trail. My roommates and I are planning on rooming there. The pictures on the housing site looks great! But I've heard pics can be deceiving, so if anyone knows info ( good and bad) on these apts your response will be greatly appreciated. Tish ^_^ (Sept class) |

Avie Ville has a great pool, and I toured the apartments with a group of students during one of my visits. The apartments were ok, but there is always a waiting list to get in there if I recall.

Kootney Place is gorgeous, but it has a few draw-backs. I think it is located in a river-valley of the island, and so the mosquitoes might be a little worse there. You will definitely need a car to commute to school, as it is a distance.

When I was there, I stayed at George Nanthan's apartments. They were great, furnished, reasonably priced, and run by a phenominal landlord and manager. I would trust them with everything! I paid $450 a month for a one bedroom. There was a/c. It was convenient too because it was two minutes away from Tina's and about 8 minutes away from school, depending on how fast you walk. So, you get your exercise and have Tina right there! Also, the landlord is protective. George Nanthan loves his shot guns if someone gives his tenants problems. Also, if your financial aid is not there on time and you have limited means, they allow you to pay when you can. As long as they know you pay, they are flexible. I miss them and Tina!

housing here isn't THAT bad
this is what i did when i first arrived back in sept 2004, and i'm still alive!
1)arrived on island 2)recovered from shock(i thought i was going to hit a goat or banana tree while landing). 3)dropped off at PBH (hotel near campus) 4)made friends 5)-Next day- went on the housing tour, talked to people, senior students regarding vacancies and landlords etc. (6)-next day, walked around alot, talked to landlords about apartments. that same day i decided to move into an aparment with a friend i made on my first day i arrived (we're still roomates). its just that easy.!! i live on Moo-Cow Trail: You have to understand that this place doesn't have streets or is arranged to a grid system like you people are used to.bThink of living on a farm...except with moutains and trees. The roads don't really have names, they are not properly paved except the main one. its kinda like those old jokes about living in a small town: "i live by the tree, across the pond right beside the cow" [who.....enjoys defacating RIGHT when i pass him by everyday on my way to school]...etc -well i dunno about the cow part, i guess that only happens if the Cow likes you..j/k. This is a nice area, (about 8 min walk from school) there are ALOT of partments here, the building i'm in has 4 openings, there is a BRAND NEW building -being built for you guys coming in august!!- that will have atleast 10 units, behind us and up the hill (beside a goat that likes to jump on our, haha-ok sorry) There is another brand new place that just went up May 05. so dont' fret, there is plenty of housing here, and it is completly normal to just show up on the island , rough it out a night or two in Portsmouth Beach-Hotel while you are finding a place in the day time. i pay 450USD/month for a comfortable room, internet, cable, A/C, full kitchen and my own washroom. expect to pay 300 USD and above, most typically you'll be paying around 4-600USD/month. make sure you read your contract very carefully, talk to your landlord EVERYTHING had to be very clear and written on the contract and initialed. You should have a functional AC, check it!!! make sure you have internet. Hot water for the shower (i had to take cold showers for a month). Gas in the propane tank. and get ready to immediately buy power if you have one of those pre paid power service devices (which most of the new units do, including mine). You should take these measures regardless, but that doesn't mean your landlord is always able to be found after you sign and pay. It happens, its luck of the draw too. some landlords are better than others. anyone who has questions, feel free to message me after this monday. i got an exam, and i'm really just procrastinating here...hahah. good luck.
