Ross HOUSING on the island of DOMINICA
Since the Ross Forum has much discussion re. housing and apartments on the island of Dominica, I'm going to try a "sticky" on the subject. This way you will be able to post on an ongoing thread and not have it become buried.
I would ask that you only include the TITLE of the APARTMENT or HOUSING. If it happens to include a proper name of the owner, it will not be edited, since it is a BUSINESS NAME. If you post the specific name of the landlord/lady, you would be violating TOS, but business names are OK. You could include the location, amount of rent cost, what is inclusive in the costs (amenities), walking distance to the campus, security, construction details, outside lighting, and best of all...your OPINION of the place (using professional language). If future posts regarding the subject are posted on their own, they will be locked and linked to this thread. I hope this eases and assists you in your search for housing on the rock. Good luck to all of you.

Valena Hill's Apartments
VALENA HILL'S APARTMENTS (as of 2003-2004)
Located on the Upper Banana Trail, it is a peach colored, two-story, cinder-block constructed stucco building. The building seems structurally sturdy, but it has several small cracks since the last earthquake. The front of the building is 38 steps from the apartment down to the Banana Trail, and the back of the building is level with the trail. It contains private single studios for $400 USD and doubles for $800 ($400 USD per person). The landlady accepts green USD, EC, or traveler’s checks. Apartments are fully furnished. Singles have a medium sized room and a large bathroom with large shower (no tub). There is hot and cold running water in both the kitchen and bathroom areas. Studios have a double-bed (full sized) mattress on a wood surface (no box-springs), and the pillow is small and rock-hard. Furnishings include bed linens, small built-in chest of drawers, trash can, small hang-up closet, table, 2 chairs, desk, air-conditioner, book-case, fridge, microwave, propane stove and oven, pots, pans, dishes, utensil, and balcony. Windows are secured with narrow-spaced bars and screens in good repair (nets). Utility costs are extra. The walk to the Ross campus is 10 to 15 minutes downhill, and it is 15 to 20 minutes uphill hauling a backpack. The land-lady is usually attentive to tenants needs and requests, and she owns the banana trees for several yards up to her place. Her brother is a member of the police force. The front of the building overlooks Prince Rupert’s Bay, and the back of it faces the rain forrest. The neighborhood is quiet. Outside lighting is fair around the immediate building, but the trail leading to it is dark at night, requiring the use of a flash light or taking the free Ross transport van. A cleaning lady is included several days a week, and she will perform laundering services for a small fee. ![]()

MAC AND JUDY APARTMENTS and NATURE APARTMENTS
Per Mega's previous post:
I would seriously not recommend it, no matter how good the price may sound. When I was on the island, I lived there for a semester and paid 325 for what amounts to a room, but (the landlord) messes with the electricity bill, and you end up paying ridiculous amounts on the electricity. I know people who have paid $500US a month for electricity. In other housing you have a meter in your apartment, for Mac and Judy Apartments, there is one meter for the whole building, and HE MAKES UP the bill at the end of the month. Everyone I know that has ever lived there complains about the electricity bill. In addition, (the landlord) comes into your room all the time "checking" the electricity "meter" he has in your room...it is so bogus. He is a real crook. ....He is the landlord of the (Mac and Judy Apartments) behind Brother (which he charges an arm and a leg for) and he owns "Nature?" apartments across from and next to Tina's. So, my advice to you is to get another apartment. You will thank me later.

RUH Apartments
Per tranke's previous post:The ross website says that these are refurbished....i dont mind.....pics of the place looks fine to me.....no kitchen but it comes with everything else....i dont cook by the way......for $400 looks like this place is a steal!....and 24/7 security!.....anyone on the island living in RUH? What do you guys think?
http://survey.rossmed.edu.dm/student...&page_no=1 Per almd2B's previous post: FYI: this property was owned privately, and it seems now Ross has bought the place. (formerly Portsmouth Beach Hotel). It is sufficient for students who don't want to live fancy. If you do want to cook you can easily bring/buy a microwave and a hot plate. Security: well don't expect to see cop cars 24/7...(there are only like 2 in portsmouth. Their idea of security might be a check-in clerk at the main office 24-7 who can CALL the police if needed. It's right beside the beach, near school as stated. I just found the place to be a bit dim so bring/buy some extra lights if you intend on studying there. It's definately good to have as a "starter" apt when on the island, and then in the 2nd semester when places open up, you will have ample choice of places to live once the 4th's leave the island. Per MitchDC's previous post: The RUH actually comes with a microwave. The security for the RUH is supposed to be the same as that for the Campus. Many of the campus security guards are actually certified as real polic officers - just paid by the University. All around, RUH seems to be a good deal (for single students who don't need kitchen facilities other than a microwave).

Apartment for sep 05
I am looking for an apt for sep 05. I think I might just wait until I get there and then find a place. One of the advisors said that this is also a good idea. I want my own place or at least share with someone but with my own room. I also want 110V so that its easier to manage with electric appliances. Fully furnished (the essentials bed, desk, closet or chest). Kitchen and bath with hot and cold water. Also air conditioning. Doesn't have too be too fancy as long as its liveable.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance. |
