Anyone know how far a walk is Avie's Ville, Kootney's? How would I be able to get some contact info regarding getting a place at the Pink House?

Avies is about 10 min. Avies is up on the Banana Trail, which is a fairly steep hill....it's always faster going down than up. Kootney 30 to 35 min., mostly flat.

Talking Kootney and Silver Lining

Im currently a first semester student and after going through the island tour decided to take a place at Silver Lining Apartments. Its on the dreaded moo-cow trail but you know what, Im willing to take a ten min walk or get a $2 taxi to school. Plus the school has free transports from the library starting at 7pm till 1am. Definately doable. Yah I pay a decent rent for Dominican standards but then again, I dont deal with ants, have a terrific ocean view with an amazing breeze, backup generators for the once a week shutdown of electricity, and backup water thats heated at all times. Call me crazy but these amenities plus a full kitchen/living room/cable and damn fast internet make this place the best of what is available on Dominica. ;-) Did I mention the landlord owns a rental service and thus gives us free rides to pick us up from the airport as well as dropping us off in those large AC vans!!

Cool Jamneesha Villa

I tried to read through everything so that I don't repeat but I got as far as the 5th page and realized that it wasn't going to happen if I was to get any school work done today. So bear with me if I am repeating anything!

First off, DO NOT ARRANGE HOUSING PRIOR TO COMING TO THE ISLAND! You're choices are extremely selective, you can't get a feel for what you're in for, and only the NICEST pictures make it online. Don't worry about not finding a place to live, there are a million empty apartments and, I kid you not, half a million more being constructed for the upcoming semester (they build quick here). While we are on the warning advice, beware of the housing committee. They are clique-ish with a few of their friends who are landlords and they will push you to rent a place that suits their laziness.

Haha, after all that is said, anyone still want to come to Ross? I'm totally playing! I love this place! Ok, so this is what you should do. Come EARLY. At the very least 2 weeks before school starts so you don't have to worry about housing situations when school does start. Remember when you take the housing tour that the listing that they give you is limited (to their friends). Talk to any of the current students on the island and they will help you.

I live at Jamneesha Villa, which is about 5 minutes away from campus (4 if you walk fast, 7 if you walk slow - I worked in the 911 system for years so I might walk faster than most ). This place is perfect! One bedroom, separate kitchen, fully furnished, internet, water, Cable, TV, Microwave, Maid Service, Hot Water, A/C, Pots and Pans, Built-In Converter and Transformer, and everything is BRAND NEW starting May 2006! Beware that not all the apartments have US outlets and transformers and converters are a pain (bring power protectors). But this place has it! The landlord is SO nice, easy-going, prompt in fixing problems, availabe, and HONEST. His wife works on campus so you will see them both around if you ever need anything (but they will never bug you about anything and they definitely don't butt into your business). Plus the place in a position that if we were to be hit with a hurricane we would be the last building to be damaged (it's protected by the terrain). Rent is $575 a month. Yes you can get apartments for cheaper but remember that you get what you pay for. There is not really a bug issue here - the occasional bug here or there but no poisonous centipedes! It's quiet those of you who like to be left alone. The neighbors are awesome. And it's more than enough space for just one person.

Bad news is that there are only 4 units that are finished and one or two that are available for the upcoming semester (because I'm staying here for my entire time - I love this apartment). Contact the landlord, Ignatius, if you are interested. For some reason, ValueMD is not letting me post his email so just message me for it.

Also, I can send you pictures of my place to give you an idea of what it looks like or if you just want to know what to expect on the island, just message me with your email.

One last thing

Be careful if you are thinking about renting off of the Lizard Trail, especially if you are female. There has been multiple "incidents" there, including a recent robbing of a couple at night time.

I know i mentioned this earlier but i'm saying it again because i really really have something against your first experience on the island being with the housing committee. They are nothing but a big bully taking advantage of brand new students by forcing them to rent apartments that they want you to just because they don't want to take you around to see more places. When you go on your housing tour, DO NOT say that a place is okay when they ask you whether you like it or not. Say that it's not what you are looking for or else they will just stop taking you to see other places.

Jamneesha Villa is newly built and there is only one unit available right now (and I believe it might have been taken already) so the housing office may not have information on it. Do your own apartment hunting when you get to the island! Don't depend on just the housing committee. It might be hard since you won't have a phone to call the landlords, but just walk around to the places close to school and ask for the landlord. This will let you see what the typical apartments are like so you have some kind of basis to compare your apartments to. You'll find a place ~ don't worry.

I'll email you the email for my landlord because this forum won't let me post emails. Anyways, if the unit is already taken ask him if you can come see the unit anyways so that maybe he can put you on a waiting list for when there is an opening. He's really nice! and you won't have a bug problem here either. =D

I was wondering what percentage of the tenants at Avies Villa are Ross students. Does any one have an idea?
