What Books and Supplies are Needed?

To current students and alumni-

What books are really needed for School? There are a lot of text and it seems kind of expensive to buy them all. Also what kind of supplies and equipment will we need on that list of supplies?

books

bdcmcmille,

You have asked a very popular question that has been addressed several times on this forum. However, the best answer for you is that "it depends". Do you (or could you) learn well from reading textbooks? If so, get the required books and use them. If not, be selective.

Don't see $$, see learning. At the time you graduate from medical school you will have spent (or borrowed) about $200,000 on tuition and living expenses. If your gut says to buy a book, do it. Over the 4 years you may have spent an extra $1000 which your loans already covered anyways. If you aren't on loans then was that $1000 really that significant an expense? My point is that many students, including myself, get stuck on scrimping everwhere they can, but looking back that extra few bucks was really a drop in the bucket. Consider buying used to save the few bucks and use that savings to do something fun. In the end -- If it will aid in your learning buy it!

in terms of books, if you are weak in any particular subject, get a book on that. definitely get grant's dissector coz anatomy lab closely follows that. also get thick 3" ring binders to hold your handouts.
apart from that, the handouts are pretty much what you are expected to know and tested on. some anatomy books like the clinical moore are more helpful than the others.
it also depends on how you like to study, if you understand better from reading the books than listening to the lectures, get them; however, i am not sure how much time you will have to read books.
get regular supplies that you would use in a college and anything that you cannot live without.
good luck.

I respectfully disagree. You know how many times I opened grants dissector . . . NEVER. The anatomy flash cards I thought were the best IMO for lab. The books for anatomy lecture, get moore and read the blue boxes and you will rock the course.

thats awesome that they have these videos. I'd never go to class if I could just watch it all at home. What would be the point in staying there all day?

As somebody mentioned above, the info that you really need to know is all in the packages that you recieve for each lecture. So you really do not need to buy any of the "required texts."

The textbooks are really only a good source of reference if you are having difficulty understanding a certain concept. So in these situations, you can always go to the library and check out the book that you need for that topic. Or you can borrow one from one of your pals. I would get the Anatomy atlas Esp. the one by Rohun as it provides you with real life pictures and not just cartoons. Anatomy flash cards are good, and having your own copy of Grants Dissector is also a good idea (all bolded terms are legal testable material when it comes time for lab practicles).

The books that I def. would buy are the Board Review Series. Very useful in Anatomy. They have red boxes that describing the most common clinical scenarios that you might face for each region of the body. Very good X-*** diagrams (useful for lab). Also for subjects like embryo which hella complicated really fast it breaks things down and simplifies it some what.

Plus these are what you will be using to study for STEP 1, so it is good to be familiar with them ahead of time.
