Passing BSCE II is a requirement for advancement to the clinical program (though passed USMLE Step I scores can be used in lieu and in NJ, as ya'll probably know, you need a passed USMLE score to start. the criteria to be certified to sit for Step I is to have a gpa > 2.5, OR passed BSCE I, OR passed BSCE II- if you don't have one of these then you won't get certified. we have letter grades - generally 10-point scale (90=A, 80=b, 70=C, <60= F)- there are classes that scale down (so in biochem 65 = a C in my term- this can vary from class to class)- sometimes all levels change, sometimes the "C"s are a bigger range. people fail - 1st and 4th terms are usually the ones- 1st tends to be people who either weren't prepared for the workload or just didn't study enough(it IS a tropical island after all), 4th term generally is because the workload is just a killer) failure of a class will get you a meeting in front of the academic progress committee(APC) - there they will recommend either dismissal or probation. Generally if you fail A class (or have a GPA <2.0- all "C"s) in the 1st term, the APC will recommend "decelling" - taking less classes - basically splitting a term into 2 terms. If a person habitually fails classes, then the recommendation will be for dismissal (there have been exceptions made, but that is probably the same everywhere!). It used to be that the if you were below 2.0 after 1st term - then the APC could forcefully decell you , but they've changed that rule. SGU usually doesn't make you repeat the whole semester, just the class you fail. Also if you are in the alternate program due to decelling, then you will be required to attend Dept. of Educational Services (DES) tutor sessions and have plan of action to make sure you don't fail again. If your GPA is <2.5 you are placed on academic probation- so you have to be careful, since failing a class while on probation will get you in front of APC- this won't come off until your GPA goes above 2.5. so, i think failing a class is possible, failing OUT is not that much of a reality. hope that helps !!

I pretty much studied every day like that as well. I thought 1st and 2nd semester were the tougher semesters. In 3rd and 4th it was a bunch of material but it was easy to sort out what and what not to know for the minis. I rarely partied and made it through semesters 1-5 first time around and passed Step 1 first time also. Just one more core to go (ob/gyn) and I'll be done with 3rd year. By the time you get to 3rd and 4th, you'll have figured out a way to study efficiently rather than try and know every single thing in the book. If you study hard, all you new guys will make it.

it happens to be that i am in the same situation in an american school and they are kicking me out after 3 years! I failed a lot of my first year courses and faced the committee and they let me back in. okay then i passed everything and now 2 years later after finishing all the basic sciences well above expectations i failed one exam and it's goodbye!!
So my advice to you is that check their policy about the option of continuing in Ross. Even if you stay, if their policy is that one more exam kicks u out, then it's a set up for disaster later (when you are even more in debt!). Good Luck! P.S. I put up a thread about what happened to me and I am looking for advice about what my options are. Please help. |
