Dismissal Advice

I just got a letter saying that I will be dismissed unless I appeal (I failed a class I was on probation for). My other grades are fine. How lenient is the promotions committee when it comes to letting a student stay and repeat the class that they failed. Anyone who's been through this and is part of the new curriculum, it would be great to get your input and your two cents as to what I should say to the committee. Honestly, it just came down to the fact that I had a really tough time with the class and need some more time to learn it. I didn't party, I studied hard, and I passed all of my other classes.

appeals

Though I have never appealed, I have heard the notorious Ross rumours about the appeals process. They will grill you and try to break your spirit, I do know that much. I know of people who have failed classes by 5 points and they have let through, where as others failed by 1 point, and were required to repeat a semester. I am guessing that you were just in 2nd semester, so you are treading new waters. The class that is entering 4th only failed 8 students (or something like that) and none of their appeals went through, though, I do not believe anyone was dismissed. I hope this is some help. Good Luck.

Hi

Hi

Don't mean to be rude but..If you failed a class and had to repeat it and failed again, then what are your chances of passing a class like Pathology, Pharmacology and Microbiology in 3rd/4th semester? The classes first semester are the easiest out of all the semesters on the island.

I am being realistic because I've known of students that failed a course every semester, repeated it, BUT passed the second time around. However, they failed a class each of the first three semesters and were eventually kicked out (I'm not sure what the rules are nowadays)/left the island to go to another caribb. med school.

If you are allowed back to the school to take the course a third time, you better be sure you can pass that course and all future courses first time. You don't want to be failing/then passing classes, eventually finding yourself kicked out 3rd semester. A lot of time and money altogether.

Sorry to sound so harsh, just trying to be realistic since I've seen it happen to ppl I know.

If you do decide to appeal, you should be genuine in regards to why you didn't pass the second time around. You must be able to find ways to change your study habits, whatever, so that you can pass first time in the future.

-Good Luck

I didn't fail a class twice actually. We're on an integrated system now so I failed the first half of the class and carried onto second semester to complete the second half of the class, so it wasn't the same exact material. Hence, I haven't repeated any classes yet. It's the only class I'm having trouble with so I know that my study habits are fine, just a tough time with a class. Always remember that every case is different. However, thank you for the input.

huh?

During first semester if you get 50 to Mps in one or two classes you can move forward to 2nd semester. But getting 50 to mps still means you failed a class. During 2nd semester if you get below mps it means you failed a class. I am not trying to be mean and if it sounds like I am . . I am sorry.

why do people always want to be negetive to a student in their low point in life? why? if you are not in the island to know how things are, dont say anything; ross is hardddddddd, 2nd semester is hardddddddddd, if you are already left the island, let me let you know the curricullum has changed, you take 6 to 7 classes per semester, no more 3 or 4. one may fail the class in 1st semester and pass it the following semester, but your cumulative average might be low. making 4.0 or passing all classes doesnt garante you that you wil pass your boards, some students have bad semesters, bad study habit or they may be going through somethings, that doesnt mean they are not smart. a friend of mine struggled here and made >200 in his board 1st time. his friend left here with 3.6 gpa, and pass the board after 2 trys. men, you will be fine, pray and email dr. L. promotion committee are human just like you and i, they know 2nd semester is very tough. with your experience, you will do very good in your 3rd and 4th because experence is the best teacher

dismissal advice

Johnny K, thanks for the kind words and clarification. I have read a bunch of posts on here stating that people that fail a class are always the ones that are slacking off and partying and not studying. That's not always the case. Things happen sometimes that prevent a student from doing well. I'm certainly not making excuses for myself, all I'm saying is that there can be a class that students will encounter that can just be really tough for them and it has nothing to do with being smart/dumb. I'm definitely owning up to the fact that I don't know something well enough, but at the same time, I'm ready to fix it so long as I'm given the chance.

hi

You failed the first half and passed the second half? You are being dismissed for failing the first half for the first time? Back when I was on the island, you could repeat the course u failed and if u failed it again, you were kicked out. Well, I misunderstood...go ahead and be sincere with the committee in terms of why you think u did not pass and suggest some things u will improve upon if given a chance. Be respectful and polite....

-good luck
