Weeding Out

I have recently found out why Ross is "weeding out" persay...Ross is feeling the heat from med school organizations to put up a USMLE pass rate that is similar to US schools (between 85-95%), so Ross is going to do its darndest to get you prepared, with the shelf exams, repeating the whole semester over, etc. It sucks, but if you keep at it, you should be prepared for the step 1.

no. they are not doing their darndest to get you prepared by using shelf exams. We still have very low shelf averages.

Ross is probably the only caribbean school that requires students to pass the nbme comp before letting them register for the step.

OR, they might be doing you a favor. Before you consider re-enrolling or transferring, ask yourself a few questions. Do you know exactly why you failed most of your classes? Can you come up with an effective solution? Is that solution something you can implement? Will you pass if you get another opportunity?

This is an expensive venture. If you go through another semester and fail, that's 2 you have to pay for. You said you have a poor biology background. Is it worth your time to go and re-take some basic biology to better prepare yourself? Think about it. G

shelf exams

Booksale.... the reason why the shelf avgs are low is because people dont study for them. Unless things have changed, the shelfs were worth around 15% of your grade. That is nothing when your fianl exam is worth 30-40% of your grade. Also, Its not a big deal about having to pass the comp prior to taking step 1. It will let you know where u stand. I failed it on the island cause I didnt have time to study for it after finals were over. I passed it after 5th semester.

Honestly, I dont think a weak background in biology was your major problem. At least you admitted that you had studied poorly, and I think this is your major issue. I dont think I used much from undergrad biology in med school. Sure, there are a few concepts here and there, but not enough to cause someone to fail badly. After 1st semester, it only gets harder. I think you should seriously consider stepping back and wondering whether or not you are attempting to enter the right career. 1st semester is like 1st grade compared to what you will face. Many very well-performing students in basic sciences found the step1 to be extremely difficult...it IS. Dont read into a lot of the ** you see on here about people scoring 265 and 270 and whatever...there was only one kid who got a 266 way back, and a few others here and there who have scored that high. Its difficult to score that high, even to get into the 200s. So try to see if you can consider another career perhaps, maybe an extension of what you did in undergrad since it wasnt biology? good luck.
