Unhappy Ross Gym

Our members don't see this ad.
I looked at some pictures in the Ross Album of the gym at Ross and it looked really poor. Granted, these pictures were taken in 2004, so I don't know the current state of the gym, but I hope it doesn't suck like what I saw! I mean, it looked more like a home gym instead of a school gym. They had 1 treadmill, 1 bicycle.... Can anyone update me on the current status of the gym? Has it gotten any better? Do people even use the gym if it is so small? I mean, having a lot of people in a small room like that would make a lot of people feel claustrophobic!

I like to make my decision on medical schools based on the gym...hehe...just kidding.

Some people said they have some new equipment, but if you are complaining about cardio equipment then I will let you in on a secret. You can do cardio outside, too!

I would do cardio outside, if I could. Being on a treadmill forces me to run for 40 min. whereas outside, I would probably be walking 75% of the time. Believe me, I have tried my fair share of running outside. Plus, it seems like it would be better to run in a cool air conditioned room than running outside in hot weather. The hot weather itself, would keep me from running outside.

Gym

They have updated almost everything in it since that photo. 3 new treadmills (total of 4), 2 new ellipticals (total of 3), and a couple of bike machines. Weights... everything you need is down there... although depending on the time of day you may have a wait. A tv on each floor with cable. Another tv with vcr on the upper level (with cardio equip) for people that bring their jane fonda sing along junk, at least 30 mats, a punching bag, yoga classes for 2-5EC (1-2 usd), step materials w/classes, and a partridge in a pear tree. Sorry, no masseuse or cucumber facials yet. Seriously... save your dissapointment for more important things... otherwise this will a long year and a half for you.

Some of you need to chill out. I know there are more important things than the gym but seriously, you guys need to work on your personable skills if your gonna be a doc. In case you didn't notice, working out is a great stress reliever for most and we must all agree that medical school in a foreign land is very stressful. I just wanted to make sure that my stress outlet was available. I don't expect the gym to be a 24 hour fitness or anything like that, but wanting to go to the gym in between breaks without having to wait 10 yrs to get on a treadmill is important to me. So please, stop passing judgements on others.

Consider you self lucky that you didn't get "try a search" since this very subject was just recently discussed.

Drama

Easy Drama Queen. You should understand that trying to interpret intonation from a casual WRITTEN message is a lost cause. I do appreciate your educating us on the benefits of exercise (that was sarcasm,) but all to often overeager PRE-first semesters lose focus of what is important. This is not because you, or any PRE-first semester for that matter, lack ability to prioritize what is important vs not, but rather you lack the experience of the island and how these schools operate. This is no fault of your own as we ALL have been in your position. However, being "thin skinned" and defensive when people are adding their 2 cents only to give you an EXPERIENCED perspective is not a recipe for success as a physician. I think it is rather ironic that someone who hasn't even stepped foot on the island is telling others what characteristics "docs" should possess. I don't have a Webster's here... but if I recall, that is about as close to the definition of judgmental as you can get (that was a mix of sarcasm and serious brow literation.)

For future reference in posting in a public forum... don't interpret intonation and don't over react if a reply does not suit your palate.

Again, your concerns are normal. I was the same way. I did NOT however scoff at those that tried to help WHEN I ASKED FOR IT.

Best of luck.

Talking

LOL at you calling me a drama queen. I appreciated your reply, I really did, finallydoc2b, but I felt your comments at the end were very unnecessary. I did not have to interpret your intonation because your comment, "Sorry, no masseuse or cucumber facials yet" did not require me to do so. It was highly judgmental.

Your next comment about pre-first semesters is clearly prejudiced. I mean, I was just asking about the facilities, do I really need to be told that I should have my priorities straight? I just wanted to know what to expect and if that is any way wrong, then what is the purpose of these forums in the first place?

And I never said I have any experience about the island, clearly I don't, that is why I was directing my questions to people like you. I'm sorry about my comment on your personable skills, I may have been a bit out of line, but I would really appreciate having helpful responses minus the harsh judgemental comments at the end.

I didn't mean to be a "drama queen." hehe...You are really one funny Kat.
