Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center

Per previous Ross Clinical Site Sticky:

Gator: Peds-Brookdale-the preceptor is very good and informative, but the rest of the rotation was just average at best. Unfortuantely, for step 2. I had to go and basically learn peds from Kaplan and First Aid. basically you spend each week in a diiferent area of peds, e.g. NICU, Floor, clinics.

Sukhtinder: Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Brooklyn- great preceptor for peds, good teaching for step 2 CK. have to do a certain # of calls, which sucks.

It's in the ghetto...stay as far away from it as you can.

Peds was supposed to be really terrible there, but i think it's improved somewhat.

brookdale

I did peds there in feb 2004 and I would say the statement below pretty much sums up my experience there.

I recently did Peds there. It was a good experience. You see a lot on the wards and then every single afternoon you have about 2 hours of lecture on a topic: first a student presents, then the preceptor goes over it again. So if you pay attention in the afternoon lectures you're set as far as knowledge base goes.

The hospital is in the ghetto. The neighborhood makes the neighborhood that Wyckoff Heights is located in look like a great neighborhood. Its totally safe during the day, but you couldn't pay me enough money to walk 1 block away at night. DO NOT WALK AROUND THERE AT NIGHT!! I'm not exagerating. Again, I took the subway there every day and I was fine, but I wouldn't even think about it at night.

Glad to hear it has improved. Most likely, alot of students have complained or the rumor mill eventually gotten to Ross.

I think Ross lets your fill out evaluation forms about each rotation and most likely students have been honest about their experience.

I did Ped. at Brookdale this year. Yes, the hospital is in a poor neighborhood but the education I received was good. The afternoon lectures are excellent. The morning lectures and grand rounds are informative too. Residents, attendings, and even the nurses are pleasant to work with.

ob/gyn, surgery- I spoke with several Ross, SGU, Nycom students rotating thru ob/gyn, surgery during the 6 weeks I was there and they all said they liked their rotations. All in all, Brookdale may lack the shiny floors, new computers, and sophisticated technology of most modern hospitals but it's a good teaching hospital and they do a pretty good treating patients despite the lack of resources.

FYI- we also have US med. students rotating through Brookdale and for those who think only Ross students can act lazy and cut corners then you haven't seen laziness until u see some of these other folks.

I agree....they are lazy, and have their noses in the air. I was assisting at a medical student lab last week. WOW, one of the students called the attending " RUDE" in front of the whole class. What guts! I couldn't even dare to speak to someone like that esp. during med school.
