Did family rotation in june 2005. Helpful residents and faculty. Most of the residents are from ross. Call is once weekly till 8PM and no weekends. students to 3 weeks inpatient an 3 weeks in the clinic. Lot of things to do as it is 10 minute ride from manhattan. Lot of nice restaurants/bars real close to the hospital.

almost went under

I read in my local paper that St. Marys which is the oldest hospital in New Jersey almost closed but was rescued last week by Governor Corzine. The city of Hoboken is now operating the hospital. Hopefully they will continue the affiliation with Ross

That's great news. I did my family medicine core there towards the end of last year and thought it was a good experience. It definitely made me seriously consider doing family medicine. Ancillary staff was awesome there... there was no scut work since the nurses and techs were so helpful and on top of things. Only responsibility was for you to learn, follow your patients, write your notes, and update the census list (inpatient only). I thought outpatient was the better half since after a couple days, the residents would have you see patients on your own and report to them or one of the attendings. The variety was great. You would go from one room and see a newborn, next might be an eye problem, next room might be an orthopaedic case, next patient might be a pregnant woman, etc. Also, a wide range of pathology because the residency is unopposed (i.e. no other residents from other specialties taking all the interesting cases and procedures) but I think a lot of the residents also rotate through UMDNJ during their training.

My son also had a great experience at St. Marys. At one point I actually thought UMDNJ would take over the hospital. Unfortunately UMDNJ is having its own scandals and doesn't have any moneis to expand.

Does anyone want to trade their family med rotation at St. Mary's for Mary Immaculate in Queens starting may 14th? I live in jersey. It would be easier for me. Thanks.

I did my FM at st mary's in august 2006 and thought that it was a very good program. I wish we had more rotations in NJ.

i did family medicine there and i thought it was great, especially the outpatient weeks. i lived in queens and would either drive to the hospital (free parking but about a five minute walk from the lot) or take the E or F into manhattan and get off at 34th st. if i remember correctly (that takes about half an hour from forest hills). then take the PATH train into Hoboken (another 15 min). it was about 5-10 min wait in between trains. from the PATH station in hoboken, it's about a ten minute walk to the hospital. it was a long commute (about an hour and 15 min.) but i thought it was worth it.

they recently changed the name of the hospital to hoboken university hospital or something like that.
