psych and living near St. Anthony

As far as Pysch, I am not sure it is offered here. I am almost done with OBGYN right now and then doing Pediatrics in a week or two. So far its been great, with plenty of deliveries and learning opportunities. Very little scutwork involved...the main drawback is a real lack of gynecology surgeries (in this entire rotation, I have only seen the lap removal of an ovarian cyst, some D+C's, and salpingectomy for ectopic pregnancy). Plenty of clinic and L+D experience, though.

Like that last post describing where most people live, its true that Little Italy/UIC/Rush/Med District is where most stay, but I lucked out and found a renovated basement one block behind the hospital (takes 2 minutes to walk). I am literally on the block that the train is on (California pink line stop). The neighborhood is purely Mexican (lots of families), but not dangerous in the least. Much, much cheaper than the other areas described above, but of course not as nice (I chose it for location, location, location).

I got lucky by finding the ad for this place on Craigslist...look for things near the Cermak/California intersection, which is walking distance from the hospital. Also, come in person to the area if you can and look for "For Rent" signs since many of the landlords here are Mexican and thus are not likely to use internet sources such as "Rooms for Rent" or Craigslist.org.

Central Maine Medical Center...Located in Lewiston, ME. Try going there in the spring/summer. Great site, they take Ross students.

Yo I just got done doing Peds and family @ St. Anthony. I thought overall, Peds was pretty decent. Family was an absolute waste of time IF you want to learn anything. The attending we had made us go to nursing homes and mostly do his work (depends who you have). However, if you are a very efficient worker, you can be done anywhere from 12pm-2pm everyday. Anyone know anything about the Cook county prison psych rotation? Thats what I got next......

I've heard it's very good...you get to interview a lot of patients and see a lot of different Psych disorders. Hours are 9-5 everyday.

I've been reading that Family Med is pretty bad at St. Anthony's. Can anyone share specifics? I'm scheduled to do this rotation there soon and would like to know what I'm in for.

I myself have not done the rotation so I can only share what I've heard of from friends who have done the rotation.

A few of my friends who did the rotation rotated with one of 2 doctors. One doctor tends to keep her students at her outpatient clinic and she sees either pedes or ob/gyn patients primarily (can't remember which one my friends told me)...her hours were 9-6 p.m. The other doctor you can rotate with will round with you on the floors and take you to the nursing homes he works at. The doctor who rounds on the floors would come in anywhere between 9-11 a.m. and would have my friends go to the nursing home from 1-3 p.m.

I think there is another doctor who is taking students now and he takes his students to his outpatient clinic which is about 20 min away from St. Anthony's...I know one girl who rotated with him and his hours were 9-5 as well.

I think you are required to attend Friday morning lectures that the Pedes and OB/Gyn students attend at St. Anthony's. These start at 8 a.m.

Hope this helps.
