Queens Hospital Center, Jamaica

OB/GYN-queens hospital-this was a hard and excellent rotation. prob one of the best. very organized and very hands on. Plus the facilities were beautiful compared to what we are used to in NY. However, some of the moodiest and sometimes just plain mean residents that I encountered in clinicals.

Psych at Queens was probably one of the best rotations I did. You are doing rotations with Mount Sinai students. The program is very organized with a tight schedual and you are expected to work and learn.

The basic schedual was Monday to Friday, 8-5 with CPEP(Psychiatric ER) on Tuesday till 8PM. Everyday 8-12 you spend in Inpatient Pscyhiatry. Monday 12-5 inpatient, Tuesday 1-5 Lecture, Wednesday 1-5 Child Pscyh, Thursday 1-5 Consult/Liason, Friday 1-5 Outpatient. In inpatient you are responsible for a couple of patients that you follow and write notes for, and since there are no residents the bulk of the responsibility in their uptake falls upon your shoulders, but attendings give you a couple of weeks to settle in and are very helpful, then if you have time remaining the attendings will go over various topics with you in didactics. I came out of this rotation thinking I don't need to study psych for the boards. So basically this rotation offers a very vast and diverse exposure to psychiatry with alot of opportunities for learning.

Ob-gyn

Definitely a hard rotation, but excellent for OB-GYN! The residents and attendings for the most part are all willing to teach. They'll let you deliver babies...with supervision, of course! A couple of the residents and attendings can be abrasive and malignant. One attending frequently degraded Rossies, but the Assistant Program Director (our preceptor) was made aware of this. Don't be fooled though, they expect a lot out of the students and don't accept mediocrity. One of the high points of the rotation is the Residency coordinator, she's absolutely awesome and is sooo nice to the students.

All in all, if you're interested in OB/GYN, this is a great rotation and would highly recommend it.

Just out of curiosity is parking supplied at the hospital or if not where can you park and what does it cost?

Thanks

Hi everybody, I'm scheduled to do an Internal Medicine rotation at Queen's Hospital Center next month. Can anyone who has done this rotation there provide any information about how this rotation is? I've never actually been to New York City, and this will be my first rotation there; so, any other information about the hospital (and maybe surrounding area) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!! :0) ~Joopnight

Currently, there are St. Georges students rotating in surgery for their core rotation. I don't think it is a very good place to do Sub-I because the service is not really that busy. I am assuming that you want to match for surgery? You might want to find a place where you can be really involved and get a good recommendation letter. QHC also has PA students rotating in surgery. Many times, those St. Georges students have to fight with the PA students as to who to scrub in cases. So, think again....

Internal Medicine

I have Internal Medicine scheduled at Queens Hospital. I'm curious as to what the hours are like and how the residents are. How is the teaching environment? If anyone has any comments or insights, feel free to respond!
Thanks.
