4:30am-7:00pm is typical of every day?? Damn, this is going to be a very rough ride.
At least the weekends are there to catchup on sleep/reading..

The attendings, especially the preceptor, as well as hospital staff are generally very nice and helpful.

The BU residents are pretty cool and will take the group out to eat/drink if they like you. They will sign for your meals if they like you and they will take you out to eat during your call if they like you. If they don't like you, they'll tell you to read in the library or to go do something else.

All you really have to do is work hard, prepare for your cases, and not be crazy, but unfortunately that is very difficult for many Ross students.

I'm starting there on New Year's Eve. Anyone else? If anyone has any info on housing, I'd really appreciate it! Also, do I NEED my car? I'd be shipping it from CA, so please let me know!

Thanks!

If you're coming New Year's Eve...housing should be plentiful...so you may not even need a car...although you will freeze your butt off if you have to walk or ride a bike far. If you're bringing a car, PM me in the fall and I can give you housing contact info

And yes, the preceptor attending is one of the nicest men ever!

Cape Cod Hospital Surgery in March/April 08

Does anyone have Cape Cod Hospital Surgery scheduled in March/April 08? I live only 30minutes away from the Cape Cod Hospital, and I really need the surgery rotation starting in March/April 2008 because one of my family members is getting married in late April, and Ross only has one clinical rotation in Mass......Cape Cod hospital.

If you are willing to switch with me for surgery at Cape Cod Hospital.....please let me know. I am currently scheduled at Cape Cod Hospital in Sept. 08. I will give you this rotation + my FM rotation as well. PM if you are interested.

Thanks,

RIRossStudent

This rotation is a little overrated

only general suregery service, how many lap choles and hernias do want to see!?! NO TEACHING IN THE OR AT ALL! One informal teaching sessions with a GREAT attending (Dr.B), ~1hour, which is really just one long pimp session....but its fun because the attending is so much fun. Start morning rounds at 4am, surgery from 7am-4pm, round on your patients 3-5pm, round out with residents 5-7pm. Here's the thing... there are NO FIRST YR RESIDENTS so you do it all... all the scut work.... LOTS OF SCUT!!!!! Getting vitals, labs, and post-op notes. Minimal pimping in the OR, actually I have only been pimped 3 times in the last 11 wks. This is a SMALL community hospital, keep this in mind. Nursing staff is VERY NICE.

There are 10 general surgeons. a few are really nice and talk to you like you are real people, a few don't acknowledge you, and a couple are just plain rude. Here after 10wks, we are finally getting to suture (which we never got a formal class for... you would think that you would learn how to suture during surgery) otherwise have fun retracting and holding the lap camera "in the wrong field" LOL!!! I feel bad for you already! You dont have any contact with other services like ortho or plastics. You can scrub in on cases on other services only if all general surg cases are covered (1x per month) and if the surgeon says ok (50/50).

I want to go into surgery, so this was a bit dissapointing considering I booked this a year in advance.

a friend told me the same thing, that Cape Cod Hosp is overrated. most I talk to tell me St. Mary's in CT is the place to be if you are interested in GS.

I don't think the rotation was overrated at all. I waited a year to do my rotation too and I think it's a great place to LEARN general surgery. You won't even have to study for it for Step 2. However, if you want to go into surgery, I agree with the above in that you won't get to PRACTICE too much, unless the attending really trusts you and you have really good residents. Only then will they let you open, suture, etc...it all depends. As for pimping in the OR--there's plenty of it from certain attendings, and yes, one attending completely ignores the students. CCH probably isn't the best place to go if you want to go into surgery, the attendings and residents are BU affiliated...but how often does BU accept Ross students into their residency program? --> haha! It's a great place to be and you get a lot of experience in the summer because the "small community hospital" explodes with tourist patients.
