i'm going to start ped at wykoff, is it a DO or MD. would i have any problem later on. thanks for your help

This is a MD program and one of the better rotations at this hospital. IM (fair) and FP (good) are MD programs too.

There are 2 DO programs at Wyckoff- Surgery and OB/GYN. OB/GYN is taught well by the attendings and residents. Surgery at Wyckoff, however, should be avoided. The DO surgical residents and attendings are incompetent, yell alot, and nobody learns anything other clerical skills.

Per the previous Ross Clinical Site Sticky:

Gator: FP-Wyckoff-not so good. At the time it was disorganized as far as the outpatient clinics. inpatient was alright. The chief residents at the time were the best part. Overnight calls you will do alot of H&P's because that is your job.

Alpathmd: FP: Wyckoff, Brooklyn, NY: As an introduction to inpatient and outpatient, it was sufficient. Teaching was scant but i did learn how to write a patient note which served me well. All Ross students. Free lunch.

Sukhtinder: Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Brooklyn:
IM- will learn lots for step 2 Cs, nothing for step 2 CK. needs improvement on teaching diagnosis/treatment, great for mastering physical exam. lots of scut. free lunch. reasonable hours. nice attendings.
FP- same as above, decent outot clinic

Call schedule at Wyckoff for IM is dependent on which attending you are assigned. For some it's optional once or twice a week while others it's not. Generally, a call is very light and you will leave by 7-8pm. The IM residents are very nice. If you ask them questions they will teach you. There's very little scut work here. It's not like King's county so u don't have to draw blood, do ABGs, or placed IVs. Don't worry, you'll learn to do all these things at other rotations. A lot of fresh clinical students dislike this rotation b/c they don't get to do hands-on things and the MDs don't teach patient management well. Some attendings are better than others but if you show interest they'll teach more. Also, students don't like this rotation b/c the PD makes students read Bates and quiz them weekly. These quizes don't count!

Depending on the time of the year, IM rotation can have 12 to 30 students. They split you guys up into group of 2-3. I think you'll have to do 25 H&P (not like 5th semester) with 3 SOAP notes for each. There's a NBME shelf at the end but it doesn't count. There's also an oral exam with the program director too. All and all, this is one of the easier IM rotation where you can read, read, and read Kaplan, Blueprint, or CMTD. don't let the PD scares you into spending all ur time reading Bates. Most students do get As unless the PD sees you prance around the hospital, running your mouth, or if he never sees you!

hello folks, just to get the word out about what a horrible rotation FP is at wyckoff. If you have a chance to do it somewhere else, please save yourself lots of grief and do it.
this rotation absolutely sucks, there is ZERO teaching and TONS of scut work, there is 24-30 hour call, regular days run 10-12 hours, its is sick. And the worst part is that for much of that time you are not learning anything worthwhile.
One of us was scheduled for 24 hr call and then had to stay the entire day post call. 30+ hours for that student. I know a certain amount of scut goes with the territory, but they just abuse the hell out of you here.
anyway, if you don't have a choice then suck it up, you'll survive. however, if you have the option don't do FP here, its not worth the aggravation.

I did family at wyckoff.
Know people who have done or are doing IM at wyckoff. From what I've been told. You get quizzed often on bates physical exam.
You're responsible for 88 HnPs. You can show up for rounds only and leave. No one cares. Call is optional. And can leave whenever.
So I know people who shw up at 8,9 or even 10 am. and Will leave for the day at lunch.
Supposdly an easy A rotation as well.

Saywhat: Thanks for giving an accurate picture of FP at Wyckoff. The calls I had there were just as you described. They would keep me (I was assigned alone to do 8 admissions, while most were paired up) post call, so it would be 30+hrs straight. As a whole, lots of scut and highly disorganized (my schedule kept changing). The only decent time was outpatient clinic, which was informative and less scut. Also, I was so busy running around doing "busywork" that I couldn't even read up on the stuff they never taught me. They make you literally stand outside a street corner til 11pm taking BPs and fingersticks of IVDAs in a bad neighborhood. If only I knew about this rotation ahead of time! I got through it but please do yourself a favor and avoid this one.

I did radiology at Wyckoff. Pretty nice experience, hours are 9am-12pm, learn things everyday. Definitely a better rotation from some of the other rotations overthere. The attendings go over different x-rays, CT, MRI, US, etc... they are willing to teach and for example, learn the basic principles of CT. I like it alot, it is to the point, learn something new everyday. Also, i was able to observe or if you really want help out procedures, e.g. CT guided biopsy....
I would recommend it to everyone.

Surgery and OB/GYN residencies at Wykoff are D.O. programs but since there is a M.D. family practice program there, licensure for California shouldn't be a problem, right?

I think (correct me if i'm wrong please) allows a maximum of 12 weeks of DO rotations. Your best bet is to do all "MD rotations" to avoid these future hassles.

hi i wanted to ask if anyone knew if its better to do IM rotation at wyckoff or Jackson Park Hospital? I know I know that whatever you put into the rotation is what you get out of it but i just wanted to know if anyone can tell me how the two differ.
