Plastic Surgery Elective

So I did the plastic surgery elective. There are two attendings who cover that service. One of them is awesome, and the other is a pain in the butt. The awesome attending has clinic once a week for 3 hours, sometimes runs over, and operates once a week. She always has cases on Friday, and she'll let you do stuff. The other attending wants you show up to the hospital and cover the one patient on the floor, hang out there all day to cover a consult if it comes in, which it rarely does. he also wants you to write a note, but because he only comes to the hospital once a week (unless there's an emergency case, which there was one in the entire 4 weeks), you have to hunt down the house officer to have him co-sign your note. He has clinic once a week, where he frequently shows up 2 hours late. Also, he never had a case on Thursday which was his operating day. So we saw him once a week, but had to report to him everyday on the same patient. Also, when he is at the hospital he likes an entourage. He's one of those people where the world revolves around him. So all in all, we spent the most time with the female attending, but apparently she can't do your eval because she's not the "main attending", even tho you spend the most time with her. Honestly, I matched into a categorical gen surg position, and this rotation would be worth it if you could work with the female attending exclusively. Otherwise it's a waste of time, and you learn nothing from the other attending, although he says that he's giving you pearls. Oh, and he doesn't get along with the female attending. Every Friday when we operated with her, he would call and say make sure someone is covering the consults and your not all in there scrubbing the cases. Of course we didn't listen, and of course no consults came in, so we operated all day. he tries to screw her anyway he can. But remember, she's the attending who took the time to teach us. But if she can't do your eval even though wyckoff makes you cover her service, then what's the point of doing the elective?

I did the Nephro elective last spring, . . . I very much enjoyed it although the hours are long, I had Dr. D, who did probably about 2 hours of teaching each day, and I felt like I learned doing the consults. Generally hours were 7am to maybe 4-7 pm (yeah big range), but you aren't working all the time, so bring stuff to read, and it isn't a super big hassel like medicine because you are focusing one system (renal) . . . do this if you want a real elective and want to see patients rather than the 1-2 hours lectures a day electives that Wyckoff offers . . . truly a gem!

There's posts in the Wyckoff threads earlier that address this and show you how to figure it out for any program. Search back a few pages. And yes, they are ACGME...

Best of luck...

Did you not want to do any work? It IS a core rotation, and you have to do some work if you want to learn something, even for those that have no interest in OBGYN, the same goes for every rotation. That being said, hours were 6:15am till maybe 4pm most days and call was only q2weeks (astonishingly infrequent huh), search back a few pages and you should see breakdowns of how each day is. Its not easy, but I learned a lot.
