I am a Ross student at Wyckoff and I feel like one of those egg hens that is placed in a 1x2 crate with 7 other chickens....there are hundreds of students here and the rotations are way overpacked....I would not be too excited regardless if they are doing this at the expense of other schools....way too many students. Currently 114 in my Surgery rotation.

Solid Teaching?

Just which Wyckoff Hospital are you refering to? Wyckoff is the chief center of student exploitation. The nurses are the rudest and laziest you will come across. Students have taken a large workload off the nurses shoulders there and just like a true caribbean nurse they want more! Teaching is not a priority at Wyckoff. What is a priority is simply being there and acting as a temp-employee. You are responsible for frivilous scut work....and that's all. I'm so sick of hearing ' You get out what you put into it". That is only partially true and only to a limit. When you are paying the hospital for services, it is THEIR responsibility to teach. Why do you think the doctors are paid to be part of the teaching faculty? They are responsible for providing literature, demonstrations, etc...when it comes to teaching. Filling out insurance forms, transfer orders, transporting patients, emptying foleys are not what we are paying the hospital for. They have over paid Caribbeans to do that work...if you can wake them up. It used to be a benefit of being a student...you are not responsible for patients and therefore your time is allotted for learning and shadowing the attendings. Have you seen what most attendingss do when they are there? They sit at the nurses station and tell everyone what to do. Students should be right next to the attendings learning why this was done, that was ordered, etc. Instead, students are off emptying foleys, getting supplies, chasing xrays or faxing some ** the unit clerk is paid to do. There is no argument to this. It is wrong and nobody cares. Just do your time and get out...that is the attitude of most students. It's a shame. I have only encountered a handful of students who have spoke out against this ridiculously flawed system...if only more could really see the light and grow a pair and join the fight.

Though I am not arguing with what you are saying, I am inclined to ask which rotation you completed a Wyckoff to give you this impression. My guess is Medicine? I did Ob/Gyn there, and can say confidently that I did no scutwork whatsoever, there were teaching lectures regularly, morning rounds were mandatory for students, and signouts were optional, we were required to see our patients, write progress notes, it was mandatory for at least one student to scrub into every procedure, etc etc etc...I learned a lot about obstetrics and gynecology during that rotation, granted I did do my reading (obgyn blueprints and BRS) when I wasn't working in the hospital.

Good luck to everyone else.

QUESTION: I am interested in taking neurology and radiology elective at wyckoff because i heard the hours are short and that you actually do learn during those hrs. Did any past student from NYS who either did neuro or radio at wyckoff have any trouble with NYS Medical Board or getting residency/medical license in NYS? I'm not sure if these electives fall under the "green" book status or if this status is even important for NYS. Appreciate any input.
