Rad/onc

Hello,

It seems as if Radiation/Oncology is fast becomming the easiest specialty for foreign trained doctors to match in to! I have heard this from a few US medical students and residents. Is this true? I always thought Rad/Onc was slightly competetive!

it's not true at all. rad/onc is VERY difficult for an img to obtain.

nope quite the opposite. Probably the most difficult to get into. whoever told you otherwise is having you on. if interested take a gander at www.studentdoctor.net and in the radonc forum. get to know what its like to be a us grad feeling like you wont match.

I heard that more and more of the top US students are deciding to pursue primary care and gravitating towards FP, thus leaving once competitive fields like Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, and Orthopedics wide open, easily attainable residencies for sub-par IMGs around the world.

Aloha,

Overall, I hear a lot more about specialities getting MORE competitive, and almost nothing about specialties that are getting to be LESS competitive.

ENT, Ophto, Derm, PRS still insanely competitive.
Anest, RadOnc, Radiology going towards very competitive.
Path, EM (among others) getting more competitive.
FP, IM, peds, psych still within reach for most ppl out there (except for certain über-academic programs).

no id say

RadOnc, ENT, Derm, Neuro surg still insanely competitive. ( i dont know what PRS is meant to be)
Urology in between
Ophto, Radiology- very competitive but rads a little less than in the past
EM (among others) getting less competitive but still competitive
Path and Anesthsia: in between (anesth "threatening" to be more competitive but not doing it on last look)
FP, IM, peds, psych still within reach for most ppl out there (except for certain über-academic programs).

so, where would you rank ortho these days? i know it's really competitive, but is it up there towards derm and neurosurg, or more along the lines of EM? just to get an idea of what i'm gettin myself into.

and i'll take a guess at PRS- plastic and reconstructive surgery?
