Residency match from med school in Philippines

    Advertisements

Has anyone here attended either the University of the Philippines med school or the University of Santo Tomas med school and has been able to match up for a residency in the US? I'm curious to see if anyone has actually been able to do it recently. Thanks

    Sure!

Hey I'm from the University of the Philippines and I will be joining the 2006 match. However I can say that more than 80-90% of people I know from my school who joined the match were able to get into a program, either by pre-match, match or scramble. I think it is because from their step 1 or 2 scores, they were able to more or less gauge the programs that they would apply to. The people who are at the top of their class got matched to Rush Univ and some in surgical programs, but most did IM and Pediatrics. I'm not bragging but from what I hear, I think in my school, it is more of an exception not to get into a program than to be able to get into one. (Maybe a mix of bad luck, low scores or being too picky with programs). I think UST is also a good school and I've heard people who got match from UST also but I can't give you stats since I'm not from there.

    Thanks

Thanks for the information. I'm actually interested in attending UP or UST. Knowing that being able to get a residency back in the states is actually a real option is great news. Thanks again for your help.

    Another Question

I just remembered something, do the students that attend Fatima get residencies in the US also? I've never heard of Fatima until i saw this forum and I'm unsure of how good of a school it is.

    Btw

BTW, I forgot to tell you the UP is a 5 year course because internship is included in the program, unlike UST where you graduate after 4 years and then find a hospital where you can take your internship or you can just go right and take the USMLE's. I personally find my 5th year (internship) integral to my medical education because of the training you get in the Philippine General Hospital, which is a tertiary hospital that provides you with a wealth (as in wealth because of the volume of patients) of clinical material. However, if you don't want to take that extra year, might as well go to UST or UE (University of the East). Just check my reply to your PM
