    residency timeline

i was reading the nrmp and eras sites and they weren't clear on a few topics:

    1) deadline for application is in december. does that mean that all your rotationsd and step 2/CS have to be done beofre the application deadline or by rank order time?

2)can someone who has gone through it take me through it? do i register for eras then nrmp or the other way around?

3)what about offers outside the match?

info is appreciated. after i read the responses i will read the nrmp and eras sites in more detail hopefully with a better understanding of the process.

    thanks

    1) The deadline for ERAS in december applies only to when you have to have your ERAS application in by. It has no bearing on when your rotations have to be finished or when you take step II CS. You have to have passed all the steps by the rank order deadline which is usually around Feb 23 or you will be withdrawn from the match.
    2) Sometime in april or so, you go onto the ECFMG website and apply ($75) for your ERAS "token." this token is a code which is emailed to you that allows you to initially register on the ERAS website which opens in the middle of July. The ERAS application is an online 15 page application that you submit to all the rresidency programs you are intersted in. the application includes everything you have done in med school, extracurriculars, research, personal statements, CV, etc. The first opportunity to submit it is in early September. This also costs mucho dinero depending on how many programs you apply to. After you submit it, you sit back and wait for programs to contact you for an interview.
    3) it does not matter when you register with the NRMP website, just as long as you do it before the deadline. This website only comes into play after you have interviewed at the programs of your choice and its time to rank them. This is the match website, where you submit your rank order list. On match day, this is the site where you find out if you matched and a couple of days later its where you find out where you matched. Hope this helps

    residency timeline

You need to start on your application now. By that I mean you need to create a personal statement and a CV (a longer form of resume') as soon as possible. These are very important and take some time and thinking. It's not like medical school applications, program directors actually read both very very carefully (I matched this past year, so I know)

Get your ERAS token as soon as you can and start working on your application now, September 1st comes quickly, especially when you're trying to study for step 2. The more competitive the specialty you're applying to the earlier you need to get your application sent out to ERAS, with Sept. 1st being the earliest, and best date to send it.

    Good luck

Passing step II by the august before match is perfect. That way you can include your score in with your ERAS application. As far as when you should finish rotations...obviously by whenever your school's deadline is. My school required me to technically finish by MAy 31 in order to make the July 1 Start date. Though I finished in April so it was never an issue.
