    Programs starting PGY-2

I'm an IMG - well almost - and there's one thing I don't quite understand about the programs that start as PGY-2
    my question is:
if I apply to a 3-year program that requires a preliminary/transitional year does that mean that if I match they'll sign me up for the NEXT year and I'll have to match for a second program to do the PGY-1?
or are those programs only for people who are already IN their PGY-1 ?
    Could someone please explain?
    Thank you

What if you matched at Position 5 in above example and you find that out after scramble then what are your options?

actually u find out on "black monday" before the scramble,
instead of saying "congrats u matched" it will say something to the effect of "congrats you matched into a pgy1 position".. effectively letting u know u dont have anywhere to go for pgy2..3..+

and then in that case u scramble for an advanced position...

    pgy 2

If you were applying for an advanced residency like derm, neuro, anesth, or rad and you did not scramble into the those spots then you would have to reapply in your intern year for a pgy -2 position.

so im guessing ur saying u matched at a advanced position (pgy2+) and not a prelim spot.. and then during the scramble u couldnt find a prelim spot?...

well then for the next 3.5 mths u would have to keep looking for a prelim spot.. could register for findaresident.com.... would be a good idea to talk to the program director of where u matched to see if he/she has any pull anywhere.... and just keep trying...

its important that imgs dont leave the prelim yr to the scramble.. scramble can be an awful period of time..

id spend the extra money and apply to enough attainable prelim spots and cover my behind... if ur able to match in an advanced spot.. theres no reason that u should not be able to match in a prelim spot if u have chosen programs wisely.. (ie not applying to harvard prelim only)

    prelim or pgy 1

OOps I thought the post said if he did not match with the pgy 2 but had a intern year.

I agree with studentmd in that case. Our deans at our school always said that if you matched to a advanced position at a hospital then if they offer a prelim spot you should take it rather than go through the match. Prelim years are hard to come by as my firends and I found out this year in the scramble. As IMGs we have the advantage of signing outside the match and if you have the desired pgy 2 then find a spot for pgy 1 and sign. DONT get greedy, so to speak!!!!!

    match

    Nimitt - you were right
that's exactly what I meant: what happens if I match for preliminary but don't ge an advanced position
you wrote I'd have to reapply the following year
but do they offer any PGY-2 programs that start the year of the match or do I have to wait a year?

lol i must still be half asleep...
then in that case Nimitt was right..
u start your pGY1 year.. and keep your eyes wide open to see if spots open up.. make cold calls.... try ti find a pgy2 spot for the following yr while doing ur internship.....
otherwise u can go through the match again the following year... sometimes some places have spots for that same yr.. but no way of finding out other than calling the program and seeing...more than likely u will have a year gap between ur internship and when u start pgy2 ... could always take a yr off to do field related research...

    pgy 2

Also try FindAResident I think its called. Its a site used by PD to find residents in higher pgy positions in their field. Its not really popular yet but I think it may be because residents and PDs might not know about it yet. You may find something.
