Just to get the fact straight - you don't "lose a year" if you start derm at PGY-2.... I guess you are still very early in the game to talk about residency aren't you.
Programs like derm or anesth. do their PGY-1 year in general medicine (AKA the transitional year) and then spend the next 3 years in the actual field. So PGY-1 derm positions are the same - they still have to do general med first. This is also why Psych is 4 years.
can somebody please outline what the differences between pgy-1 and pgy-2 positions are? do you lose a year if you apply to say a dermatology program in pgy-2? why then do some programs have 4-year programs from the beginning? what's the difference between doing a transitional year and then getting into a derm residency? don't u lose time/?!?!?!
