    Pathology residency

I am an International medical graduate, US permanent resident. I applied for residency previous year with the following credentials:

    Step 1 251
    Step 2 CK 244
    Step 2 CS Second Attempt

    No US clinical experience

I applied for residency with failed CS in ERAS. I applied to 46 pathology programs and 53 Internal Medicine programs. Out of that I got 5 calls from pathology and 2 calls from internal medicine. I got ECFMG certified in December 2012. I matched to a university pathology program. I would not say it is a top program but it is ranked somewhere at number 50 according to internet sources.

I have heard that current pathology market is really poor. People do not get a job even after fellowship. Should I try to switch to medicine? If yes, what are my chances of matching again next year to family medicine, internal medicine or neurology?.

Sorry I'm giving you a hard time. The thing is, the pathology job market has been horrible for years now, and SDN has been giving the play-by-play the whole time. Did you wait until after you matched into a pathology program to start doing research on your chosen career?

Of course a switch is possible (after at least one year). However, you're not a competitive applicant, and leaving a residency adds another red flag. I haven't been through this, but I would imagine the tough part is getting your PD behind you. I don't think you can ask to leave if you match, but stay if you don't. Its a risky choice...

I did not know much about pathology job market when I applied for residency. In fact I applied even before passing my failed CS. I thought I would not get a single interview but thanks to God I did. One of my close relative is a pathologist in USA for 25 years. He is doing extremely well. He told me one can always find a job in pathology if one is willing to move and compromise but it is true that the job market is not the same as internal medicine. So with that I placed pathology on the top of my rank order list. I had two medicine interviews from decent places but I placed them after pathology.

I know I am in a tough situation right now. It will be difficult for me to change specialty given my CS attempt. But I guess the most important thing for me as an international medical graduate was to find a residency. Looks like I will have to try to adjust to pathology. And that's it.
