How to switch from Family med to Internal Medicine

Hi,
I matched for PGY1 for Fam. Med but I really want to do Internal Medicine.
I would like to know How to go from FM to IM, what should I do?

What do you want to do after residency? If you want a 9-5 outpt practice then stick with FM, outpt practice is the same (other than of course you are trained to see kids as well) and you will be better trained to handle a busy clinic with FM. If hospitalist is your dream, then again stick with FM as you can do this easily from IM, FM, or med/peds. If you want a traditional IM subspecialty fellowship then of course your decision is made and you should discuss this with your PD (be transparent and things will go much more smoothly as you will likely need to letter from him/her). You would have to re-enter the match or contact unfilled programs.
