Will I get a surgical residency?

What are my chances of getting surgery with a 220 on step 1?

You should look it up on the Match statistics. There is a PDF form out there that states the average step score students have that get matched into a specific category (e.g. Average step score for Family Med was Step1 = 216... this is just an example). They don't base residency spots on Step 1 alone so your gonna have to read up on it. If you want prelim surgery, 220 would be okay, but categorical surgery might require a higher score or stronger LOR/interview.

The Step 1 score is but one of a whole pantload of competitive elements, and that goes for any specialty. Do not forget:

    - School reputation
    - Step 2CK score
    - Research/Publications
    - LORs
    - Interview skills
    - Additional degree
    - Surgery-related experience
    - Arrogance factor (kidding... kidding...)

Of course, remember that some programs will have a cut-off score set for Step 1 (among other things). If they happen to set their cut-off higher than 220, then you are poop-out-of-luck, because they will never even review your application.

Getting a prelim position is very possible but a cat surgery position as PGY-1 very hard. As a prelim work your a__ off than maybe a repeat PGY-1 as a cat position happens. I know this can occur. Good Luck!
