Undergrad GPA as dealbreaker; Do Residency Programs Care About Undergrad GPA??

I just got a sinking feeling. I read a post about someone who pre-matched. The person listed their USMLE scores and their UNDERGRAD GPA.

Are the decison makers for residency programs interested in applicants UNDERGRAD GPAs? If so, I'm probably screwed. Mine is barely 3.0. I was counting on doing well in med school and the USMLE to pave the way. I also have age working against me so I don't need any additional negatives like a low GPA from my undergrad days. I thought that once I got into med school that would not be a part of my background for consideration for residency.

If an applicant's GPA is low (around 3.0), how much of a deal breaker is that?

Anybody out there who can address this?

    Thanks!!!

Chill out dude. Clearly some programs do ask for college transcripts as evidenced by the information sited. This appears to be the case in Canada and not necessarily the US.

And FYI, all of the Canadian programs are more than respectable.

why is it that this issue keeps coming up?????

Seriously, for the nth time, your undergrad GPA is not a factor in your residency app. If anyone DOES ask for it, it's just for record sake and nothing else. And for 7125, the point that JCU was making was that no respectable or decent residency program will judge you based on your UG GPA. If they even ask you about it in passing, you should probably stay far away from that program b/c they clearly have no idea what it takes to make a physician...

Um, didn't you start some other such similar nonsense about MCAT score requests for residency a few months ago? Where are you coming up with this stuff? If you're a med student, you should know how irrelevant it is and if you're not a med student, then why are you fussing so much with the understanding that med students have of the process???? Oh, wait, that wasn't you fussing; it was 7125--raises eyebrow, que suspense music.

UNDERGRAD GPA is not important factor, but USMLE score is the most important factor for a US residency position.

Your post doesn't make any sense? I never said an MCAT score was necessary for residency. If you had any sense or grasp of the English language, you would realize that I merely provided a link that some programs do require an applicant to submit his/her undergraduate GPA for consideration to their residency programs. The funny thing about the posters on this website is that they are so jumpy when they read stuff that they go bonkers.

Just relax, re-read the posts, take the information provided for what it's worth and move on.

If anyone reads the link, it states "Additional documents can be added such as an undergraduate transcript." This implies that it is up to the applicant if they wish to include the UG transcript (i.e. they think it might strengthen their application). It does not say any CaRMS programs require them - it simply states that programs will specify what documents they need with a full application.

If you think your UG transcript is going to hold you back, don't add it. I've seen nothing to suggest it is going to be requested specifically in either Canada or the US.

You're so right. I should spend more time building upon my rudimentary grasp of the English language. Please forgive me and please also be gracious enough to let me know how the residency app goes as you begin mailing in your undegrad transcripts. All the best!

    Sincerely,

    D3

7125.....from ur posts u look like canadian, only advice i can offer to a fellow canadian that ur above reply sounds a bit egoistic. canadians r generally humble and polite.

hopefully, i did not offend u...but there is no need to be rude on the forum...real purpose of this is to help each other.

    with regards
