SOAP ??? How many applications can we send?

    Advertisements

So I've only had 3 FM interviews and I think I would be happy in any of these programs but I know my chances of matching are very slim. Today I researched about the new SOAP system of "scrambling". I have one question which I cannot find the answer to. Maybe another member can help me out? If unmatched how many programs can I apply to using the new soap system? Here is the link to the website. Hopefully someone will have more luck than me. nrmp.org/res_match/yearly.html]NRMP: Residency Match: 2012 Main Match Schedule

I have also looked and as of right now there is no detailed information. I did read somewhere that they are supposed to post more information about the SOAP process sometime this month.

In the latest ERAS newsletter, it mentions that "Friday, March 9 The R3 System will notify all applicants by e-mail of their eligibility to participate in SOAP." Does that mean we can assume we matched if we don't receive that notification via email?

No. It clearly states it will notify all applicants, not those who haven't matched. Also that would defeat the purpose of the official Match Day on Monday.

To the OP - there is a SOAP podcast on the NRMP site now I believe. You'll probably get your answer there.

So I researched the SOAP eligibility notification process a little more in detail and this is what I found on the NRMP site:

"At 12:00 noon eastern time the Friday before Match Week, the NRMP will send emails to ALL match applicants indicating whether they are eligible to participate in SOAP. If you are determined to be SOAP-eligible AND you learn on Monday of Match Week that you are unmatched or partially matched, you will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs beginning at 12:00 noon eastern time, and you will be able to apply to unfilled match-participating programs through ERAS®. If you are determined to be SOAP-ineligible, you will not have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and you will be able to apply only to non NRMP match-participating programs during Match Week, even if you are unmatched or partially matched."

I guess that answers my original question.

When going through the SOAP process, do they access you the application that was submitted via ERAS to MATCH? Can we still upload new Personal statements that would reflect a little better other programs? In my wife's PS, she stated how she was facinated etc.. with Surgery and that were the programs she applied to. No interviews. So, my questions during the SOAP if we select IM, FM or anything else. Will her PS hurt her, because she talks about Surgery specifically?

    Any input would be grateful.

Take a look at the SOAP podcast on the NRMP site. Pretty sure you can (and should) tweak your PS if you plan on applying to a different specialty.

What feedback if any, does anyone have for the SOAP, we tweek the PS to apply for other specialties, however her LORs are from Surgical doctors. Will that pose an issue?
