Transitional year

hi. what should i put in the "PGY-2" interest section of eras application for transitional year. my LoR are IM and i want to do a transitional year to check if i can get into radiology or other more competitive ones.How should my personal statement look like?

transitional years are usually for people who are also applying for a specialty that starts in the pgy2 year, like anesthesia, neurology, radiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and others.. they're also usually harder to get because on average they're easier than prelim years, and since higher caliber students apply they're usually harder to get.

in that space you should list whatever pgy2 specialty you're applying for. like the one listed above, but i don't think you need to fill that part out if you don't want to.

If you apply for IM Prelim and Cat. positions within the same program - are you basically increasing your chances of getting matched? (even though prelim posn' will b only one year and then u apply for a PGY-2 posn the following match)....yes?

So is it worth applying for both - prelim and cat - for all the programs u are applying to or is there some other premises you should consider bf doing so?

uh no....if you do a prelim year, the next year you would be reapplying for a PGY-1 categorical spot....very few PGY-2 spots open up in IM.

Thanks! So what are the cons of matching to a prelim IM spot? Apart from the fact that you have to reapply for the following match season to PGY-1 which you may or may not get.

the con is you are taking away a prelim spot from someone who ACTUALLY NEEDS it to go to a pgy-2 specialty (neuro, ophthalmo, PMR, etc) the following year...

eh...that's not so true...spots open and if yo are a prelim and for whatever reason decide to remain in IM, if you have proven yourself, you may get a pgy-2 spot (this is not gen surg where they punish you by making you do another scutty intern yr)

but if you apply to both, you will be shooting your self in the leg...and m/l DEcreasing your chances...they may very well look at that as you applying to IM as back up...
