MD/MBA - does it give you a leg up?

I feel that having an additional degree such as the MBA, will bolster my chances in helping me land into the residency I'm shooting for. Do many of you agree with my statement, or not so much?

In my mind, I think it makes the candidate look different compared to multiple other MDs the program director's are continuously seeing. Anybody have any input on this?

My fiance is an MD/JD and it did not seem to help him at all in the match last year.

In the future when he can work as a lawyer and consult for law firms representing doctors it'll be great... but right now it didn't make much of a difference. (Even though I think it is awesome).

I have an MD and about 3/4 done with an MBA. During the interviews programs varied with respect to how much weight they gave the MBA. Some programs completely ignored it. Others asked detailed questions about why I am doing it. I guess it's something extra to set you apart, but I didn't notice that anyone was actually impressed with it.

Probably not generally, but in some specific programs with some specific docs who are interested in the business side of medicine it could. I think the biggest value of it will be for you personally, because it will help you in your non-clinical aspirations (i.e. running your own practice, going into admin, working on wall street, whatever they may be). I'd also recommend checking out the MD MBA Association MD MBA Association they have some excellent resources from md/mbas and current students

    good luck!
