what are you supposed to do when you don't get a residency?

Our members don't see this ad.
this is sort of an offshoot of my other thread....

what's the short list for USIMG's who have to sit out a year?

do an externship at an img friendly hospital?

try to pass step 3?

what else?

If something doesn't work out for me back in the US I'll stay here in Germany and work here for a year and do my step 3. Hoping that that won't happen but I'm preparing for it.

Wish I could reassure you it isn't the end of the world but if i didn't match last year I would have died.... If you don't match, I would suggest taking step 3 and find something to do; something that would look good on your next application and prevent you from looking like a complete loser....

You can do Step 3, Research is also a good option. Just do something medically-related that can boost your transcript. Some people do EMT...but I don't see how you could really get into it in only 1yr.

There are quite a few medical volunteer opportunities available abroad. For example, a volunteer association that I worked with in the past recently completed a 2 week medical trek in the Himalayas, in Nepal. The expedition consisted of 20 medical professionals, including physicians, nurses, medical students, and volunteers from all walks of life. They climbed approximately 10,000 feet, and treated almost 2000 patients in the different villages and towns along the way. If that doesnt improve your CV then nothing will.

hell no. i doubt crap like that will give much of a boost if your grades and scores are marginal.

are we allowed to take step 3 before doing any residency training?

if i don't get a spot, i'd rather sit home all year and just study for step 3.
I heard that test is a biotch...
that 2 months, 2 weeks, 2 days usmle rule doesn't apply to me... especially with all the crap training I got during clinicals.

hmmm

well if you don't get a residency..... "don't be mad UPS is hiring" - Notorious B.I.G.

But hopefully that won't happen. Basically do research and take Step 3 - you just need your diploma and ecfmg certificate (obviously step 1/2ck and cs first) for step 3. Basically do something productive. In my interviews so far the interviewers wanted to know what makes me unique (really) - so you better have some good stories/experiences. I included that stuff in my personal statement - which they were drawn to. They are tired of hearing that you are hardworking, trustworthy blah, blah, blah. You gotta give them real examples otherwise they'll look at you like you're the most boring person on earth - NEXT!

Oh! Maybe find a cure for cancer in your yr off if you can - but then you'd be the richest and most respected person on earth so you could care less about residency.
