My interview experience
Our members don't see this ad.
I went for an interview at an FP program in the southwest. I won't say the name, but you may be able to figure it out from some things I say. 7 positions, with 70 interviews. I was there with 5 other people. Aside from me, there was 3 other rossies, one 5th pathway and one from university of nevada. Program paid for one night stay at hotel (higher end hotel). Hotel did not provide shuttle so the cab cost about $ 30 from airport to hotel and about $5 from hotel to hospital. Dinner with residents was good. The resident came to pick up me and two other people up. We went to a laid back restaurant, Tex-mex. There was a second year and an intern. The intern was a 5th pathway and the 2nd year graduated from a US med school. They each had an a couple of drinks....they were very laid back and were joking around with all of us and made us feel like a bunch of old friends hanging out. The next day the interview began at 8am. We were met by a 3rd yr (ross) and she was very relaxed and showed us around, free breakfast. Hospital is not the newest place in the world but very clean and people were extremely polite (as they are in this great BIG state). You have a trong support staff here. Meaning you are never alone as an intern. You can ask ANY attending for help and they will. You cap out at 5 patients (not including OB). Night float system. Since it is a catholic hospital, you don't have to do or participate in abortions, BTL or any other form of contraceptive (they don't do them there, but there is a portion of the hospital owned by a university program, where they do it there, so you can go there to do that stuff if you want). You can or you don't have to, the choice is yours. The interview was with 6 people, 20 minutes a piece 3 residents, 1 PD, one attending, 1 shrink. They were all, extremely relaxed and made you feel that way. Some questions I was asked: 1) Tell me about yourself 2) why do you want to go into FP 3) where would you practice afterwords? 4) what do you think of the current health care situation? 5) how was island life? 6) why do you want to move to this state and or city? 7) would your family move with you? 8) tell me about your wife and child? 9) does your family know of the long hours you'll have to work? 10) tell me about any legislation you are aware of that help or hurt residents? and the pičce de résistance (my favorite)---edited I have been warned that I committed a TOS violation, so if you want to know the really funny exchange between me and the resident (IMHO), pm me. The interview ended at 2 pm, my flight was out at 4, I got back to NY at 10pm only to find that my car battery had died.....long story short, should have been home at 10:30, but home at 1am... If you guys have question, shoot.

Well...high five for the great post!
Nice going, who would have thought music/hockey preferences would have gotten you into such good books! Good luck with the rest of your interviews!

I'm totally puzzled. How was your (excellent and entertaining) music+hockey story a TOS violation?

yeah the mods on this site are really over reacting.. i'll probably get a warning for voicing my opinions of them. I have in the past. that's why we should all go to Student Doctor Network|An educational community for students and doctors spanning all the health professions. and post there. the mods there are a lot more reasonable and don't warn or make you edit things just because they're on a power trip. we're all adults here and should be able to have more freedoms of speech. this is just ridiculous

thats pretty funny coming from a user that has over 5000 posts. Every one has to follow the rules. Even the president of the USA. Thank you very much smugrinch for your post. I was loving every word of it.

Agree
SDN is much better on several levels. VMD is good for people to learn about off-shore schools but, once that task is done, SDN is generally a better source of information for med school residency, etc. The level of moderation is lower, yet the level of discourse is generally better on SDN.
See you over there. Quote:

it was the full name of the hockey player...since the mods have decided that ANY name, including celebrities and people who have no expectations of privacy is now against TOS...been told that it would be too much work for the mods to have to figure out which name are being used in vain or not...but isn't it going to be MORE work for the mods to have to go through each and every post to find names...and to be fair, the mods should have to go through EVERY post and give EVERY post that mentions a name a warning...and i have seen posts that have not received warnigs that have names in them...if you are going to give SMU grinch a warning, then you have to make sure EVERY post has been scrutinized and warned...i would think really that is more work for the mods than to just use a bit of common sense and give warnings and infractions as are warrented...zero tolerance rarely works.
