How does Prelim/Categ Matching work?

Ok so I'm confused... how does prelim/categorical matching work when the time comes. Do hospitals have a "prelim list" and a "categorical list"??? When we make our list do we specify prelim or categorical?

Because I have a strange situation where I went to an interview that was technically for a prelim spot, but during one of the interviews, the interviewer told me that he would speak on my behalf to get a categorical position!

So... how do I know? Anyway know how this works?
