Are my basic science individual letter grades looked at for residency placement?

Sorry i'm a little confused. Are my basic science individual letter grades looked at for residency placement or do they only look at Pass or Fail???? I've been told different things. I know my Step 1 scores are the most important by far followed by recommendation letters. Could someone please fill me in on this topic. Thanks for any replies and please forgive my ignorance

The bolded is not exactly correct. Many places consider step II more than any other step. In fact, the Mayo clinic, does exactly that. They said that they consider step II far more indicative of future success as a clinician than step I. I tend to agree. Now as for grades. Programs do look at the grades (from what I was told by PD's). Let's say you skirted by with barely passing on most things and all other things being equal, you may be considered a weaker candidate than those with better grades. Now, if you aced everything and you come from a school that has a reputation that is good (or a tough reputation, if you will), that too will get more attention. Of course clinical grades are more important than basic science grades. Again, this is from what I have been told by PD's and PC's. It is not uncommon for a person who has top notch grades to be something less in the clinical aspect. This holds true for the opposite. IMHO, I think you should try and capitalize on everything you do. Again, I must qualify the above. These are not cold, hard, fact. This is the insight I have gained in the past three plus years due to my exposure to PD's, PC's, CR's and residents in general.

there are literally thousands of applicants applying for less than 10 spots in some programs. everything on your application is looked at and plays a significant role. even your volunteer experience and hobbies can be what causes an applicant to be invited for an interview or rejected.

Thanks for the inadvertent Depeche Mode fix, huh?

Everything may count...true. However, some things weight more than others. I have heard that basic science grades are less important than clinical grades. Some rotations/attendings grade easier than others making it subjective. I think as long as you show improvements you should not worry too much. BTW, if you did poorly during basic science, make sure your step 1 score is impressive. You don't want to show a consistent downward trend.
