Do Canadians know what they are getting themselves into?

Do you Canadian students know what you guys are getting yourself into by going abroad to study medicine? You guys have a TOUGH ROAD ahead of you, real tough! This post isn't to scare you people, but most of the Canadians who are in med school don't seem to have any idea of how difficult it is to make it back to Canada.

Some of the pitfalls:

1. Canada is VERY anti-IMG
2. If it wasn't you people wouldn't have a better chance at an American residency than a Canadian one
3. You will most likely be applying for a J-1 visa
4. Most residencies don't want to deal with visas, PERIOD
5. Even after that, you have to serve 2 years in an underserved area in the states
6. Even if you manage to match in the Canadian match, you have to work 5 years in an underserved area


NOT TO SCARE YOU, BUT YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING BACK TO CANADA ARE SLIM TO NONE..............AND A LOT OF ROADBLOCKS ALONG THE WAY.......DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/LIFE UNLESS YOU ARE A STRONG STUDENT............

Unfortunately many Canadian students have no idea what they're getting into. Your points are valid, however you have failed to mention the lack of residency spots with the increase in US med school seats. If this new resident shortage bill does not pass I would not go to the caribbean for med.

wow, will it really be that bad? If it's as bad as you're saying many 2nd tier schools may simply close..

There is a thread on the 2009 match which examines this very issue in this forum. The situation looks grim esp. for us Canadians if there isn't a drastic increase in residency seats.
