    Where do pathologists work?

If you're a pathologist, are you restricted to working inside labs at large hospitals? What about other places like community centers, medical clinics, managed care facilities, or even private practices? I was looking into pathology but from browsing the net and talking with other students, it kinda seems that the job opportunities for pathologists are alot more narrow than other specialties. Any input would be appreciated.

Ah I see, hmmm...I was more interested in a clinical setting, was thinking about clinical path instead of anatomical path.

    new york

actually there is a fellow who takes the train with me every morning and he is in his 50's. He works for the New York city medical examiners office. He told me they are always looking for pathologist.

An interesting thing is while I wear a spot shirt to work during the summer he wears a suit and jacket which can be pretty hot. I asked him why does he need to do it when he is deakling with DEAD people and he said because he also has to deal with their families. INTERESTING
When you become my age you will realize all of the hard work and studying was worth the effort.
"60 years young" another 60 to go if my doctor sons keep me alive with free prescriptions!!

My room mate from pre-med is a pathologist now. Really enjoys it.

If you want path but still want some clinical time with patients while they are breathing, you absolutely can do it.

A medical license gives you the right to practice medicine. No matter what kind of residency you do, you will always be qualified legally, ethically, and morally to see general patients.

A pathologist can volunteer at a free clinic, see general patients at his own office, do medical missions, work in an after hours clinic, cover weekends at a walk-in clinic, do surgical assisting, be the doc at a children's summer camp, do the physicals for the high school football players, be a part time prison doctor, the list goes on and on.

If you want to go into path of any flavor but still want to do some general medicine you can find a way to do it.

I don't know any pathologists who do it, but I know some other specialists who keep some private office hours for general patients, just because they enjoy it.

Don't think you'll get admitting privileges and all that though. Obviously....the patho gets them on the way out....not on the way in.......LOL!
