Volunteer Research Opportunities at the University of Chicago Hospitals

The section of Hospital Medicine at University of Chicago Hospitals has instituted a formal program whereby IMGs who are transitioning into the US Medical System are given the opportunity to engage in numerous ongoing clinical medical research projects. The program will be directed by Dr. Sameer Badlani, Faculty in the Section of Hospital Medicine. IMGs who are accepted can expect to gain valuable research credentials during their contribution to research projects, be offered mentorship for Match/interview related issues and cultivate a range of contacts from within the community of physicians at the University. Letters of recommendations will be contingent on the level of the volunteer's commitment and quality of work over the period of 4-6 months. As there are many clinical studies currently running at any given time at the University, it is not possible to go into the specific nature of precisely which area of Medicine one might be able to participate in, but all efforts will be made to induct the volunteers into an area of their interest.

The applicants need to be aware that the University is not offering any form of visa or financial support or commitment. Working in the research program is purely voluntary and does not lead to any publications or guaranteed residency interviews.

We are looking for a group of approximately 8-10 enthusiastic volunteers. We would prefer those candidates that can commit 20-40 hrs week to the University for a period of time not less than 4-6 months. As the training and mentorship of volunteer IMGs would require a considerable investment of time from our side, it is expected that the IMGs will assess their personal and financial situation properly before committing.

its interesting. this doctor is not responding. i truly dont appreciate people who dont even have the deceny to respond with either a yes or no. that is unprofessional and an indication of the minimal amount of respect there exists for FMGs.

im disgusted by the lack of response. you want us to be enthusiatic yet its ok if they are not.

Which doctor are you referring to? If it's Dr. Badlani you are referring to, do realize that there is a great deal of interest in positions like these. It might well take some time for him to reply.

However, when Dr. Badlani does get back to you, be sure to inform him of your disgust in him and how you think he should be more professional.

I'm not sure. I believe he recieve a large number of applications. He is only one man, so it might take as long as a week. If you don't hear from him soon, send him an email and followup.

i usually do comment on the time frame...despite who it is. when the response is quick I appreciate the quick reply and when the response is delayed, I mention that as well.

Usually, what people do is send a quick reply stating they currently will be reviewing the sent material and mentioning when the will be getting back (due to the overflow of responses or whatever the reasoning is). At that point,...even if it took 2-3 weeks, atleast an appropriate time frame was given.

but no response is unacceptable. especially when email is the primary mode of communication. Some of us are unused to professional levels of communication.
