length of rank order list
the length of your ROL will greatly increase your chances to match. here are the stats for internal medicine, but the same holds true for all specialties. these stats are from 2005, for IMGs matching into IM.
155 - matched, 518 not matched 1 23% (155/155+518) 2 38% (146/146+237) 3 55% (159/159+130) 4 73% etc, etc, 5 72% 6 81% 7 88% 8 85% 9 87% 10 75% 11 82% 12 89% 13 95% i hear sometimes the doom and gloom people saying US-IMGs only match 50% or so... that statistic does not include the number of people accepting prematches. but also, people should realize going on many interviews, and doing well on each of them, will increase their chances accordingly. |

man, i remember being scared to doo doo about the whole 50% stat. i turned down 3 pre-matches also(programs who offer them almost always do so because they suck, and every single one of my friends who took a pre-match left the programs after 1 year). i over-applied, over-interviewed, and ranked 15 programs. got my number 1 choice without problem.i think i am still paying the travel expenses! ( my best pre-match offer got ranked 13th i think)

Yea.. I'm starting to feel that way.. I think I am over doing it... bought 5 air plane tickets, all departing within three weeks from each other... kinda sucks. two of them, i really don't care for.. oh well. |

sorry, the 155 number is how many IMGs matched into IM. the 518 number is how many IMGs did not match. i didn't feel like posting all the numbers down to 13 ranks, so i just did the first few. 155/673 = 23% less that 1/4 chances of matching if you only rank 1 program. interview a lot, rank a lot, and match. i was just trying to put some numerical values on ranking programs, and the chances of matching. here's the link, this one is for 2007. refer to page 50. these are the stats from last year. 1 20% 2 30% 3 41% 4 57% 5 61% 6 68% 7 80% 8 81% 9 75% 10 75% 11 84% 12 82% 13 81% from this trend, based on comparison from 2005, one might conclude you need to rank more now than you used to in order to match. IM has become just a little more competitive than it used to be. |
