just wanted to add to this. I emailed a cpuple programs for internal medicine, and this is what they have to say. I will be a SGU student in Fall 08
UTSW internal medicine "To be frank, it is very difficult to obtain a residency at Parkland (UTSW) if you are a foreign medical school graduate. Your USMLE scores must be above 90 on both Steps 1 and 2 for your application to be looked at by faculty. At most, we accept 5 or 6 FMGs, out of over 800 applications from FMGs. Extensive clinical/research experience (6 months) in the U.S.usually gets you to the second step, which is to be granted an interview. I'm not sure about the ECFMG question, or whether or not a graduate of SGU has ever been a resident here. There are other residency programs in the area which I'm sure you are looking into. I hope this information is helpful to you. We received almost 1900 applications total this year, so it's very competitive. We matched with 54 candidates. I hope this information is helpful to you. Best to you in medical school! Pam Marshall" UT Houston Internal Medicine " Thank you for your interest in our program. As far as being in our program, we actually matched 4 St. George graduates for this year. The main issue you will have is getting your documentation as required by our program in a timely manner to get a permit to start on time. Of the 4 graduates, only 2 have permits as of this morning and all are due to start on June 24th, so hopefully the other two permits will be issued by that time. Without a permit, you cannot work so that delays residents and puts them off cycle, which is difficult for fellowships. It is entirely doable, but like I said you really have to stay on top of the paperwork, since your graduation is in May and we must have copies of your original graduation certificate, as well as your ECFMG certification, before you can even apply for you permit." |
