i just never understood why USMLE's count so much--i truly do not believe it is a valid measure of knowledge, whether research tries to prove it or not, because they don't account sleep factors or or anxiety factors or family situations at home or anything like that. if you didn't sleep the night before, obviously you are not going to be able to concentrate the next day and just want to curl up in a ball. Sometimes we are on call as med students yet have to take the USMLE near those times and can't readjust our sleep. once you are ecfmg certified, shouldn't that be good enough? I heard that judging by USMLE scores is actually not allowed as per the AMA--as long as it is a pass they should put you in consideration and look at the entire application. Cuttoffs shouldn't be legal regardless of competitiveness--people should get into careers they want, not be weeded by things like that and never be allowed to pursue anything that doesn't provide proper judgement of their abilities. Also doesn't the number of interviews depend on what specialty you apply to too?
Also how do you overcome the situation of a past residency? why should one's career be over for that, shouldn't that show them that the person has even more experience at least? |

Board scores do count more for IMGs as residency programs frequently have little objective data to otherwise evaluate these applicants.US students have their academic record, deans letter, etc.Residency programs have more reliable data to judge such applicants. Its unfortunate for one test to in large part determine ones future, but thats true in general for many of these stadardized tests.
There are programs that will take someone with past residency experience,if they really want them.It is a problem because the government does not want to pay for one individul to train in multiple specialties. Its considered a waste of resources. In spite of this it is can be done, but try to pick your specialty carefully as switching out will be difficult. |
