Is it legal to fill up a residency program with your own nationality?

One of the residency program review for St Vincent Mercy Medical Center/Mercy Health Partners Program http://www.valuemd.com/survey.php?mo...9b2145bd32ee91

said that 18 of the 21 residents have the same background as the program director. Lets assume this is true (I will check this out), is this legal and is this good for our country (good old U.S.A)?

Raises questions

It sounds like a bad deal to me. There is such a diverse population of physicians that it seems that having one background so over-represented is more than chance. I can't imagine that it is legal, and I don't think it is ethical either. Not good for the country for such things to happen, and I don't think it is good for the education of the residents. I have benefitied a lot by being in a very diverse program. G

re:raises questions

they call that program inbreeding. after awhile, everyone thinks the same way, which could be good, if they are all on the right track, and could be bad, if they are all lost ona subject. legality? most likely no. proovable? most likely no also.

PD's selecting candidates based on nationality & acquintance

i also disagree, first it's ethically wrong especially coming from PD's, second the diverness should be maintained. which is usually done by selecting candidates on their qualifications. It's somewhat of an irony, when the diversity of residents is being maintained while these PD's who are a minority counter act the equality policies

pretty wierd you would come to a medical school site with a username like that just to attack a certain group of people, instead of talking about med schools themselves.

legalities

if a program were trying to fill up a place with one group that would be illegal. but if it so happened that it came out that way and say the match list demonstrated that it wasn't planned, there isn't anyt hing wrong with that;

Good point, steph. One would have to look at circumstances. G

if you want to debate some philosophical issues, I suggest moving the topic to the "lounge" rather than posting here in the match issues forum.

PLease note, since the thread here took a turn that is more appropriate to the "relaxing lounge", its been moved there. Look for thread entitled "Moved from Match forum".
Thank you.
