I does bring up an interesting question though.. How many programs WANT more residents, but can't afford them?... If that was really an issue, they could work that our real quick!- I know a lot of people who would work a residencey for free if it would get them one they wanted...
$40K loan to live on x 5 or 6 years.... about $200K extra in loans, but how quick would you be able to pay that back in one of the higher paid specialties?
