Tookie

I don't know if the whole Stanley "Tookie" Williams thing is just bombarding us in California, but I'm starting to get sick of it. The man killed four people, started a infamous gang, never apolagized for killing the four people (he only apolagized about the crips), and expects to live the rest of natural life in San Quintin at $85,000 a year at a cost to the tax payers (i lose more then a third of my money every week and it shouldnt go to people like him).
And the "an eye for an eye, leaves the whole world blind" excuse is pitiful, unless he has eight eyes or four lives.
I really dont care if he was a nobel prize canidate and Jamie Foxx did his movie, the innocent people he killed could have been doctors, writers, etc. We'll never know because they were murdered 25 years ago while he sat in a cell safe and sound.
Sorry for rambling on, but seeing all the vigils for him makes me sick because not once has anyone put up a vigil for those who were murdered.

I disagree. Despite what he may have done in the past, he is worth more to society alive than he is dead. I'm not saying that killing four people is forgivable but he has probably saved many young lives through the years by opening their eyes to gang life and prison.

i doubt heavily he has saved more lives by convincing kids not to join gangs when he started a major gang, gave opportunity for thousands and thousands to join, indirectly caused the deaths of thousands by forming this gang.....he made a choice to kill those people, those people didnt make a choice to be killed

If you...

do the crime, you do the time and pay for it accordingly. The man had all his appeals turned down, he was legally convicted of killing 4 people who did not asked to be brutally killed. He knew the risks when he did what he did, he pays according to the law. The laws of the satet of California were applied accordingly. The color of his skin has nothing to do with it.

On the same token, Will Scott Peterson be executed because he is white?

Is redemption a reason to be pardoned? That is an interesting debate for years to come.

The lesson in his case.....stay away from trouble.

My Letter To Incarcerated Youth, No. 1
I've been on San Quentin's death row for more than 21 years. I hope that this brief message will provoke thoughts of change among you.
Across this nation, countless young men and women, like you, are vegetating in juvenile halls and in youth authorities. More and more prisons are being constructed to accommodate your generation when you grow to adulthood. The question is, can you become motivated enough to defy the expectations that many people have of you?
For those of you who are fortunate enough to regain your freedom, prepare an agenda to survive outside the walls of incarceration. Learn about computer technology, politics and the sciences.
On the other hand, if some of you are facing a lot of time, I suggest that you strive to educate and discipline your mind. If you have access to a library, read every relevant book that you can get your hands on. Educate yourselves about history, world religions, math, English, spirituality and your culture.
It's time to flip the script. You or I can complain 24x7 about the problems of poverty, drugs, violence, racism and other injustices, but unless we choose to initiate a personal change, we will remain puppets of unjust conditions. Unless we change, we will be incapable of changing the circumstances around us.
In conclusion, there are two ways to view your incarceration: either your present situation will convince you to straighten up your life or it will be the beginning of a wasteful future behind bars. Or worse - you'll end up on death row.
