The weight "issue"

Okay everyone, don't get mad or upset...

Recently in the SGU forum someone discussed losing weight and if it was possible to lose weight in Grenada. And some of the responses were really suprising, in the sense that they were unkind and just callous. How many med students and doctors out there believe that overweight people are just lazy? I don't believe that they're lazy, everyone is different. And I can tell you from experience that once you decide to lose weight and change your lifestyle, it is entirely possible. It takes a long time, I mean, you aren't going to lose it overnight.

The point is that there are overweight students in med school, so why be so judgemental? Are they hurting you? I have a friend who was obese when she started med school and she' lost 50 pounds. So don't be so critical of others.

Okay, I'm done

Generally, people who are obese (rolls and cellulite) have a problem with diet and exercise (or lack, thereof). Example Mimi (Drew Carry Show)

People who are robust (filled out) have a genetic predisposition for a certain body type. Example Drew Carry

Most people have a moderate metabolism that slows as you get older. Some people have a fast metabolism throughout life and those are the ones that do not exercise or eat properly and look alright (even if they are setting themselves up for heart disease).

Most people who have unwanted (and unhealthy) fat tend to eat improperly and do not lift weights or do cardio. And if they did eat sensibly and lift weights then they would look 10x better, guaranteed.

I agree McGillGrad. Then there are people who don't look fat and look skinny but have Jell-O for muscles (also bad). The wiggly muscles. Lifting weights helps even if you are overweight.

I used to work at a gym and some people would come in everyday, get a trainer, dietician, etc. and still could not lose much weight. They appeared to be "obese" but were in good shape.
A person's habits (diet mostly) is important, but genetics does have to play a role for some people. I think the genetics excuse has become used by too many lazy people with poor eating habits, so most assume the genetics excuse is made up like the big bone excuse.

some people are unkind. i wouldnt want to far and i realize the reasons can be both phyical and behavioral. but i wouldnt be so nasty as to denegrate a person to begin with, i try to understand that changing behavior isn't easy, and i wouldnt use weight as the one characterist that would define my feelings about a person.

Is it really necessary to make cruel comments to people who are asking for advice not stupid opinions.

nwil19 no one asked for advice in this thread. The point payal83 was making is that people shouldnt be so judgemental. I think for the most part we have all been agreeing with her and adding to it from our own experiences.

I agree about the part about people being unkind.Moderators in particular are very unkind people... They police people in the lounge(sometimes in error), and then do not acknowledge or apologise to them.Got to grin and bear it.... ...anger does not help in such situation, so I eat(Am I not smart, how I saved myself from another unfair OFF TOPIC warning from Stephew ,beleive it or not,in the Lounge by talking about eating).Eat a lot actually, really eat alot and end up with a weight problem. So basically moderators are to blame for my weight problem.

Last edited by Naveenanirada; 11-19-2005 at 09:23 PM. Reason: Stephew unfairly reprimanded me at the lounge ....
