doctor dream bashing
Hi,
anyone feeling really discouraged and depressed about this whole process? i have applied for 2 years and got rejected both times, no interview, no nothing. i am sure many people are in the same boat as me. i actually experienced backlash against a "friend" who thought she was giving me the truth and perhaps a dose of "tough love" (?) by saying that i am too stupid and lazy to get into med school because i didnt get a 4.0gpa. thus, only people who have this can and deserve to be a doctor. lovely eh? and of course she said if i do get in, that this caribbean school is crap, absolutely crap. but sometimes these negative words really stick and right now (as i am waiting to hear if i have been granted an interview), maybe she said this to sabotoge my possible interview. i dont know. i just want to say, please don't put your trust into anyone because they could use it against you in a very cruel way. |

Maybe she's right-- maybe you're not smart enough to get through med school, and then you'll flunk out of SGU or wherever you go.
But chances are, if you're very dedicated to medicine, you'll make it through. You'll be a doctor in a few years and you will practice medicine as an attending physician for about as many years as you've been alive (in my case, I'll be an attending at around 30 and then will practice medicine for another 35 years). And as long as you are going to a solid accredited school like SGU where you can practice everywhere in the states, it won't matter a lick where you went to school, and someday you will make a difference in patients' lives. Also, your friend sounds like a real prize. Stac' |

For instance, I live in Colorado and last application cycle I interviewed and didnt get it. About a month later they invited me to apply to their post-bac program, which is where you go to another colorado campus and take science classes. If you get a 3.5+gpa overall then you are automatically accepted to the med school the following year. So I applied. They invited 8 people to apply for 3 spots. After the interview they emailed me and said that I wasnt accepted but the reason was because "the committee feels that my science background is too strong and that I would not benefit from this program." What a bunch of pooh pooh huh? He said I could email him if I had any questions. Well at that point I was pretty pissed off so I let it loose in an email. I asked him why I was asked in the first place considering they knew my grades beforehand. I asked why they dont want the strongest in their program because whoever goes to this program ultimately goes to their med school. He never replied. I met with him later in the summer with a bunch of other students that didnt get in and he gave us a sheet of paper saying what we can do for the next cycle. Well on mine it said to gain another clinical, clinical research, or research experience. Since then I was involved with many things including another 2 labs and I interviewed again the next cycle but still no waitlist or anything. Fast forward to this year. My sister goes to the Uniformed services SOM (military med school) and I applied there. I interviewed there last yr, no waitlist no nothing. This year interviewed again, no waitlist. Fine, I dont mind, but what I do mind is that I got the rejection email from the security officer--someone totally unaffiliated with the admissions committee. On top of that, the letter was completely unprofessional and had a spelling error: Subject: ADMISSIONS APPLKICANT REJECTED I'm sure you will be notified by mail about this during the week. I'm sorry to see that you have not been selected by the USUHS Admissions Committee to enter the Class of 2009. On that note, I wish you the best of luck and success in the medical field. Mr. Norman ******** Getting a letter like this is disheartening and unprofessional. Its tough getting a letter like this after all the work you have put in and especially from a security officer who knows nothing about what it feels like to apply to medical schools and to get rejected over and over again until you begin to practically accept it. The dean got a letter from me and a visit from my sister who is embarassed at her own school. I got a phone call and letter of apology later. Its rough but if you want to do it then make it happen. Dont let any of these people who have no faith in you say that you cant do it, especially those with no experience with this situation. If necessary, use it as motivation. If you dont have the grades or scores, then thats another story, but if you do, then make it happen. Bottom line, do what you have to do and make it happen. |
