Thread: Any correlation between mcat scores and USMLE scores??

Just wondering if people who struggled on the mcat typically struggle on the boards, or is it completely unrelated. Its a little concerning to me because, lets face it, if we all had great mcat scores we probably wouldnt be here. Anyone have any good info on this?

i would disagree with a correlation. medical school totally changes the way you study. time is not on your side anymore and the days of cramming the night before are over. i think its fair to ask anyone who has finished two years of basic sciences if they were better students before or after. lots of folks would tell you they wish they were like this from day 1 after developing the skills to learn medicine after two years. if you dont adapt then you sink.

the mcat is a piece of junk and doesnt measure anything except bank balances or paxil dosages. i dont think its a good predictor at all coming from a canadian perspective. from my school there were lots of folks with 90% and above averages yet they did poorly on the mcat. lots of those folks ended up in the caribbean and are usually in the top 10% of their classes.

i havent taken the USMLE yet but know folks who failed the MCAT and rocked the boards. some personal friends of mine had low GPA's under 2.5 from SGU and also did above 220 on the boards.

you yourself are the best predictor not some standardized exam.

like it or not there is a correlation. But its just that. There are plenty who lay outside of that. BUT youre right. You might learn to learn, get study skills late in life etc. So its not inevitable for any given individual. Its jst a correlation.

incidently what is the stastical correlation? what does "r" equal to? is it published anywhere? in the end what does it really mean?

I don't believe there is ANY correlation. I had a friend from Europe who is practicing in States right now. He didn't even rignt the MCAT in order to get into Medical School in Europe. He did his residency in NY.

Even if you check out each board's website, they didn't mention anything about the MCAT.

The only place you can see the Correlation between MCAT and USMLE is when you wanna transfer to some of the U.S med-schools after the 2nd year which is part of the requirement.

If any one says, they need MCAT at the end of the road, pls bring up an official evidence or a website showing that.

MCAT ( Medical College Admision Test ) and that's it.. It's not a Medical College FINISHING EXAM or etc.

That's because he went to med school in Europe. Do they even do the MCAT there??

I think you misunderstand. NOBODY has said you need the MCAT for anything at all. What people are saying is that there is a statistical correlation between doing well on the MCAT and doing well on the boards. That's it. You just went off on a tangent completely unrelated to anything. G
