Right. We need to be proud of what we achieve and not take the elitist "all IMG's are inferior" crap off anybody, especially Lou Dobbs and other media types.

I think it takes a stronger person to go offshore and succeed instead of curling up into a ball and giving up because we're considered "not good enough". People need to be educated about that.

where'd you go?

Not a lot of people ask where I went to school. When they do, I am happy to tell them. Most people say "wow, that must have been great" I have yet to have anyone not come back because of it. Many people send their parents and children to me, even after they find out I am a caribbean grad. What they do care about is that they get good care. Where you went to school certainly won't impact how your patients feel about you. G

Hello people this is the American population we are talking about. We forget and forgive so quick it’s not even funny. As long as the blue collar American has his beer and his big booed blond women there’s nothing else in this world that matters. Even if Lou Dobbs comes right out and says that foreign medical grads are useless and don’t go to them the American public will listen to his message for 2 weeks and than its business as usual. So don’t worry guys. This is not the first time IMGs took criticism and it won’t be the last. Hey if Bush can get elected can we can practice medicine in this great land of ours. And if worse comes to worse you can have a “complimentary beer for consultation sign” outside you business to drum up your clientele. However you may only be limited to Nebraska and vicinity.

you know being a son of an American blue collar worker I find that offensive......why do you have to stereotype. blue collar workers are inteligent people and dont sit around all day drinking beer....they probably work harder then you on a daily basis........

my dad is a blue collar work and has worked hard his whole life and probably knows more about politics and business then a person with a PhD....."he isnt sitting around all day drinking beer with his big booed blonde women"

not every blue collar american is stupid enough to follow the words of Lou Dobbs....

americn was built by the hands of blue collar workers, so lets respect them for once....it is bad enough that our goverment is shipping thier jobs away to mexico and china....

The individual is smart. A group is idiotic.

Most Americans don't know, and probably don't WANT to know much about the healthcare system. As long as they get treatment and meds on a.. somewhat.. well, better than England, timely fashion.

But the tims are a changing. These days most college students though who ever even THOUGHT about medical school, have known about foreign medical schools as viable options.

Even when I got home, every clerk or whatnot that asked where my medical school was usually said, "OH! I have a [insert relative] going to Ross (or SGU)"

Hey, I represent that remark!

My dad was a blue collar worker, and told me that people like us could never afford to go to med school, much less get the opportunity.
Thank God for the internet, that spreads the message of opportunity!

And God Bless the hard working Blue Collar Man!

re:

thanks skip for replying to shy's blue collar comment. I agree. People need to educate themselves before making such comments. I worked construction back during the summers of high school and can assure you the stereotype is like all stereotypes, true for about 5% of the targeted population.

This is also true for the number of americans that know nothing about foreign grads. They criticize them without being educated. They only know about the high profile cases that go against IMG's. As stated earlier most healthcare professionals know IMG's and respect them for their accomplishments. The media normally only show one side of the coin and thats the side that brings in more viewers.

I forgot whose quote it was but I like it," if ignorance is bliss, then I'm clinically depressed."

background

My background is blue collar. My grandfather always told me to be a lawyer. He has a 6th grade education, but realizes the value of an advanced degree. He is in awe of the fact that I practice medicine. It makes me happy to have made him proud, he is my greatest role model. G

Let me paraphrase an old saying (was it jefferson?)
I fought so my sons could het jobs. My sons got jobs so my grandson's could explore the arts and sciences.

Shouldn't adults have an adult understanding of the world; that we appriciate those who work and take pride in it, and often they do it so their kids can have more choice in their calling?

on the other hand the children of the well off often become, well, Paris Hilton. Which leads to another old saying: from clogs to clogs in 3 generations (the fight to work and the next gen gets to make a living. the next gets to make lots of money. The next are lazy layabouts and lose it).
