Ohio State to Provide Clinical Experience as Part of Ross Students' Final Three Semesters of Veterinary Education

November 01, 2004 03:52 PM US Eastern Timezone

Ohio State Becomes 21st Clinical Training Affiliate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine

EDISON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 2004--
Ohio State to Provide Clinical Experience as Part of Ross Students' Final Three Semesters of Veterinary Education

Ross University, one of the world's largest providers of veterinary and medical education, announced that The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine will begin offering clinical training to Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine students as part of their final three semesters of veterinary education. Ohio State is the 21st American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)-accredited school to become affiliated with Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. There are 28 AVMA-accredited schools in the United States.

Having awarded more than 1300 doctor of veterinary medicine degrees since opening in 1982, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine offers comprehensive veterinary training modeled after U.S. programs. Students spend the first seven semesters of pre-clinical training at the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine campus on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, before returning to the U.S. for three semesters of clinical training at an affiliated, AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine.

As an affiliated institution, Ohio State will provide Ross students a total of 48 weeks of training, primarily at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on its Columbus campus. Students will be reviewed and approved by Ohio State's academic dean and will be subject to the same academic standards as Ohio State students. After completing the clinical training, Ross students will be eligible for national licensing exams.

"Ohio State's decision to join with the 20 other AVMA-accredited schools already affiliated with Ross in providing clinical training to our students is a testament to the quality of our programs, the strength of our faculty and the high standards of excellence to which we hold our students," said Dr. David DeYoung, Dean of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. "Ross University is committed to providing the best possible educational training to aspiring veterinarians."

"As one of the oldest and largest veterinary colleges in the United States, we have sent more than 4,000 doctors of veterinary medicine into the world since 1885," said Dr. John A.E. Hubbell, Professor and Interim Dean of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. "We are proud that students from Ross University will now be a part of that great history."

The following AVMA-accredited schools are affiliated with Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine: Auburn University, Colorado State University, Cornell University, Kansas State University, Louisiana State University, Michigan State University, North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, Oklahoma State University, Purdue University, Texas A & M, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Illinois, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, University of Pennsylvania, University of Tennessee, University of Wisconsin, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and Washington State University.

About Ross University

Ross University is one of the world's largest providers of medical and veterinary education offering doctor of medicine and doctor of veterinary medicine degree programs. Founded in 1978, Ross University School of Medicine is located on the Caribbean island of Dominica. Since 2000, more Ross graduates have obtained first year residency positions than graduates of any other U.S. or foreign medical school. Established in 1982, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts/Nevis. The school has promoted more students into clinical rotations at affiliated U.S. Colleges of Veterinary Medicine than any other school in the world.

While Ross is considered a "foreign" school, the medical students, spend more time in the U.S. than in the Caribbean, with the last five semesters spent completing clinical rotations at a network of top U.S. teaching hospitals. The veterinary students spend the final three semesters at one of 21 AVMA-affiliated U.S. institutions. Ross students are held to the same high standards and must pass the same licensing exams as graduates of U.S. schools.

A division of DeVry Inc. (NYSEV), an international higher education company, Ross University enrollment, registrar and financial aid services are located in Edison, N.J. For more information about Ross University, visit www.rossvet.edu or www.rossmed.edu.
